Last month I had a girlfriend visiting and we went into a local boutique and promptly both fell in love with the same scarf--big, thin, soft and a super cool pattern featuring reds and blacks in a sort of loosely interpreted animal print. But the price was $210 which is WAY beyond what I'd normally pay for a scarf so we both left it behind.
It's been in the back of my mind ever since and after ordering 2 winter coats, and having neither work out, I decided to just bite the bullet and get it (as part of the "buy fewer but higher quality things" school of thought that some on the forum espouse).
I was in the area and dropped by the store last night and the woman knew what I was talking about but said it was gone. She did, however, give me the brand name (We Are Owls) so I could try to hunt for it myself.
I immediately got home and started googling. Turns out it's a small little company with very limited distribution. I found a few but not the color/pattern I had seen and was about to give up the ghost when I saw a link to shopbop.com (one of my favorite online retailers) and, lo and behold, they had the EXACT scarf I wanted (pic below--is that the unhappiest model ever??!?!?). Alas, it was still $210 but I decided to forge on. So imagine my delight when, in checking out, the site asked if I wanted to apply my "gift certificate in the amount of $197.50" to my purchase!
I have NO idea where this amount came from. I'm not sure if it's an old credit or a promotional thing or what. I've received no emails and had no idea it existed! So I'm getting my scarf for $13 and couldn't be happier!
However, then I got a bit scarf happy. I found a second one in a similar pattern but different colors and it was 40% off (from a different site) so I ordered it as well, thinking I'd try on both in person and keep one, depending on which I'd use more. I sort of thought the lighter version would be perfect for dressing up a basic white tee and jeans (one of my favorite combos).
What say you, forum? Do you think one of these is infinitely more wearable than the other?
