So I'm a bit late to the party, but we saw it too - on New Year's day. We were following Angie's advice and watched (for the first time for the kids) episodes 4-6 first ( I saw them in the 90's but only once, and hadn't remembered much) So we've had a very Star Wars week!

They liked it!

And DD#2 has been speculating lot about the parentage of Rey. It is certainly giving her more to talk about to our uni student age church population (since it's summer and church is at our house they are allowed to stay up after the service for what we in Australia call supper - light snack in the evening)

ETA - not to imply that DD#2 ever has trouble finding things to talk about. Inveterate chatterbox!

My son and hubby...and me to some extent are Star Wars mad. I cant tell you how many times I've seen all the films as my son has all the dvd's and we re-watch them often. The three of us went on New Years Day and saw it in 3D Imax...DS's eyes were out on stalks he enjoyed it so much!

Too funny about the Emo comparison...soooo true and hilarious!
Btw there was a remote controlled full sized R2D2 in the cinema foyer that drew quite a crowd

I loved this movie so much, I vote that The Hobbit franchise be taken away from Peter Jackson and given to J.J. Abrams for a do-over.

We FINALLY saw the movie today. Love the Darth Emo characterization! And now I know why everyone thinks it is so good - it echoes the original in almost every scene. From beginning on a desert planet, to the cantina scene, to the showdown on the skywalk. Even the scene with Darth Emo following Rey on the cantina planet echoes Luke's training with Yoda. But

SPOILER ALERT

they didn't make any fans by killing off Han Solo! My kids (ages 15, 13, and 11) loved it. They seem to think that Rey is Luke's daughter.

Echo -- I disagree! Killing off Han Solo (even though I love his character) was the best "tough choice" they could have made. It moves the plot forward and cements our dislike for the new villain, who starts out as a kind of baby Darth Vader that we kinda sorta feel sorry for. Never mind the fact that an awesome character like Han Solo has to die with drama, and not fade away as a doddering old man.

*sigh* I suppose you are right, but I'd have rather had Leia die. Additionally, I am not sure how "on-board" Harrison Ford was with renewing the original characters, and he may not have wanted to do another movie (I don't know if they are planning one, but it sure looks like it). Either way, I do wish they would have saved him dying for the next one instead. Rey and the Wookie on the Millennium Falcon aren't quite the same.
