Thanks to a post on this forum, I discovered Scaramanga satchels and have decided to get myself one!

It isn't cheap, but it would be a great investment for me, since I currently carry an Adidas backpack to class that does not fit into my style and I cannot wear regular handbags as they usually slip off my shoulders and those wouldn't fit my books anyway.

I'm just wondering which one to get - the tan polished one or the distressed one? Here is the link to the bag I want, with pictures of both finishes - http://scaramangashop.co.uk/in.....uctId=1013

Please help me decide! I like the distressed one, because I feel like it wouldn't show a lot of wear and tear and it looks like it has character. But I also like the polished finish though I'm afraid it will get scratched and worn easily.

What do you think?

I am as torn as you are! I am drawn to the distressed one also but am second guessing myself and wondering if the polished finish won't "work" better. Sorry no help, just sympathy.

I think either will work. The tan one is more traditional, while the distressed one is more edgy. I think either of them will wear well for you, as long as you take reasonable care of them. If returns are easy, why not order both and try them at home. As you say, it's a big purchase for you.

I vote for the polished bag. It's easier to dress a polished bag up or down, whereas a distressed bag is rather limited in that aspect. Nice taste in bags, by the way!

This is tough, but I think the polished bag might be more versatile. They are both lovely!

I just want to inject a word of caution about satchels. If you are carrying several books for any kind of distance, you can really hurt your back and shoulder if you sling them on one shoulder rather than carry them in a backpack.

Plus the leather satchel itself will be much heavier than your backpack.

If you can, try to see these in person, and load them up with what you usually carry to see if it feels like a strain.....

I like the polished one. you could pretreat with leather conditioner as well.

They are both beautiful and practical bags. As a student, I'd probably have gone for the distressed leather, but the polished one can take you anywhere and look sharp. Hmmm...if you're worried about scratching, etc., as Sona said you could just spray it with leather protector and be on your way!

Thanks ladies! I think I should get the polished, after all. If I end up getting an internship/job in the near future, I can still use it for that!

Isis: I'll go try a similar size satchel in my local mall and see how that feels. Luckily, I don't carry a lot of books, but it doesn't hurt to try it out, right? Thanks
