Sartorial fantasy: custom-made winter wear

Hello I am cold. And broke. So I am entertaining myself by fantasizing about what I would have hand made to my specifications if money and time were no object. Right now my (winter) list looks like this:

1. Cobalt leather jacket (scuba style)

2. Navy cashmere sheath dress (lined with silk), ¾ sleeve, knee length, and with matching cropped jacket

3. Navy tweed blazer (classic English riding coat) and slim navy (plain navy) wool trousers

4. Navy brocade smoking jacket (lapel and cuffs navy velvet,
lining hot pink silk) and matching navy velvet lounging trousers

5. Heavy silk robe, black or navy background with Asian style peach
or almond blossom print/emboidery (western style sleeves, not kimono style, for practicality) and pretty silk PJs to wear underneath

Your turn - what would you have custom made to keep you warm this winter?

Your list sounds lovely. It's a pity you don't live by me I could make them for you.:) So I'm taking a busmans holiday this week and I'm making an item off my list namely a red coat in a bit of a cocoon shape with a large collar and slightly padded lining for extra cosiness. The fabric is a pure 'boiled wool'. On my list also is a gunmetal grey peacoat and brown faux leather short jacket.

Ohmigosh. I was just reading some odd novel about a (19th century) guy who has to have clothes made, and his tailor insists - because it's winter - on padded wool lining inside his tuxedo and other suits. In the book, he's all complainy about being hot and itchy... but I was like *Aha!*

I want a lined wardrobe. Pants, coats, jackets... and wool socks. Lots of wools socks. Do you know how hard it is to get wool socks in California? Everything is cotton!

Rachy, I often wear men's wool blend over the knee socks. Might be some of those hanging around S.F.

I would like everything lined in thermal fabric. It is absolutely frigid here and predicted to drop more. I have to layer and layer and layer to keep warm. One starts to feel like Ralphie in A Christmas Story where you can't put your arms down. So I guess I'd like soft, light weight fabric that can keep you warm in zero degree weather ( that burns fat and tightens the skin lol).

I would like to duplicate my new Limited pants that Tanya found in navy and charcoal. They only come in black.

I would like a dress that can be dressed up or down...maybe I'll borrow your idea cause it sounds great! Custom made for me means it would fit great and not emphasize my apple belly.

And a series of tops made exactly the way I want, without a cap sleeve in sight.

Diane G...busman's holiday? Does that mean you are a pro seamstress? Drool. I wish I knew you!

Yes, for my sins I made a promise to myself to make more of my own stuff in between orders this year. It remains to be seen You know what they say about the cobblers kids... I like the sound of a dress that can be dressed up or down.

MG what's a scuba style jacket?

Actually, I just discovered a local business (coats by Mary Ellen) that does custom winter coats. They put a suede panel in the back to break the wind. They are reasonable at $450 or so. I'm hoping to get one for next year

I love the idea of MuseumGal's cashmere dress and smoking jacket and Diane's coat sounds just gorgeous!

For me, I think I'd want a few perfectly fitting, flattering sweater dresses in warm knits that aren't too bulky (cashmere, maybe?). Maybe with fitted waists and flared skirts and some kind of gently draped neckline. For starters, I'd want a plain black one, one in the burgundy/plum range, a charcoal or navy one, and maybe another black one with subtle metallic threads for an easy winter dressy outfit. All in slightly different styles so it doesn't look like I'm wearing the same thing all the time.

Also a simple black wool coat with some kind of slight quirky detail (in the collar? the buttons? not sure) that's fitted at the waist, has an exaggerated a-line bottom, and is roomy enough on top to layer bulky sweaters under without looking too big.

And jeans that look great, but literally feel like sweatpants.

An ink blue, tuxedo style pants suit (by Armani maybe).
Exercise clothes that actually fit, made from natural fibres - bamboo, linen, cotton.

Oh Diane, I WISH you lived near enough to sew for me. I've actually looked and cannot find a local seamstress. I do sew, but am what I'd call an advanced beginner, and am too afraid to try anything more complicated than a simple dress or pants in summer weight fabric. A scuba jacket is a slim fitting, seamed jacket that zips up the front, often no collar, often with zips at the sleeves too. Literally like a scuba jacket. (http://www.google.com/search?q.....v&)

Ah, thanks MG. It's just not a term I'm familiar with for some reason. I am very familiar with the style though. In fact I want to make my brown faux leather a bit like that.
