SALE THURSDAY ONLY: Buy the big dress now or wait until slimmer?

I wanted to wear a 40s/50s vintage red satin dress that I have to my brother's wedding this summer, but it doesn't fit. I am trying to slim down until August (and I really hate being my current size), but then Talbot's decided to have a 30%off in-store sale (only tomorrow) and I found this dress. I think I want this dress anyway, but do I get it on sale for frumpy-chubby size 12 (I think) me or do I hold out for 3 more months and then buy a dress at my then size? Anybody who has had similar issues about shopping and changing sizes?

gorgeous dress. I have never bought something in a smaller size hoping to fit it later and it seems like a bit of a gamble. They always say dress the body you have now. Could you buy the bigger size and take it in if you lost weight?

Thanks Sally. I wasn't planning on buying a smaller size until maybe July, if they still have it then.
I was studying the seams on the dress and it's very princess-cut, so I doubt I will be able to take it in more than 1 size without throwing off the line of the dress.
I went up from a size 6 to about a size 12 rather suddenly recently and I am having a lot of trouble getting dressed at this size b/c my shape has changed a lot. I'm not sure it would look that good on me now with all my "loose bits".

Sorry I must of read your dilemma too fast. That is a hard one. If you dont think it would suit you at the weight you are now, maybe you could hold out if you think the dresses will still be around. Lets see what the experts say.

How are you at weight loss? I would only buy what is reasonably lost. I would buy the dress in the size now if you're unsure about how much you've lost. You can always take it in; but it's hard to make a dress bigger!

I just checked the Talbot's return policy and you can return within 90 days. So why not buy it, don't take the tags off, and see where you are in three months? If you haven't lost the weight, keep the dress. If you have, return it. If you really love the dress, buy it in your current size and the smaller size, and when 90 days is up you'll be able to keep whichever one fits better (unless you don't need another dress in your smaller size). Also, if the ends up going on further sale in the meantime, you can always get a price adjustment or return and rebuy if it is still available in your size.

Just tape the receipt to the tags on the dress so you don't lose it.

thank you ladies. Steph, I like how you think! I'll see how much the dress are in Canada and maybe I can afford to buy 2 sizes, keep the tags /receipts for returns.
Lyn, I'm not sure how I am at weight loss, b/c I haven't gained this much before and I feel totally odd right now, not like myself (med induced gain). I hope to get back into a size 6 by the end of the year, but I don't think that is reasonable weight loss in 3 months (60 pounds approx.)
Who on the forum has had successful weight loss lately, and how much is reasonable to lose in 3 months (I'm hoping half the weight, maybe 2 sizes)?

Oh, I love Steph's idea. A 90-day return policy is really fab for this kind of thing. I'm sorry you're uncomfortable right now (a good friend of mine struggles with his meds doing this, too), but being sure to have an amazing dress should help put your mind at ease about the event... which may even help with the weight loss (they say stress makes you retain weight, right?), so it's a win-win.

Hmmmm - I know the wisdom is to dress the body you have now. What would I honestly do? I'd probably buy just one size down to split the difference. And hold onto that receipt! And get started journaling my food and going for walks and fitting in push ups and squats in my every day routine

Honestly, I don't think it's reasonable to expect to lose 30 pounds in 3 months. If you're very young and very fit and naturally slim and you are willing to cut back your food a LOT and do a LOT of exercise, it might be possible, but generally over time I don't think you should expect to be able to lose more than a pound a week. So in 3 months you can reasonably expect to lose 10-15 pounds.

Heck, I had 80% of my stomach removed last year and it STILL took me a whole year and a lot of diet and exercise to lose my excess 55 or so pounds.

Thanks MaryK for the good dose of reality, that's the advice I needed. So maybe 15 pounds and 1 dress size sounds reasonable. Now I should follow Mo's advice and go down 1 size in dress.
I just called the store and it's already marked down 30% plus today's promotional 30%. Hopefully they have my size(s) -- 1 reality dress to wear, 1 inspirational for the future dress.

I like Steph's idea to buy 2 dresses. But I also want to urge you to buy a dress (that dress or another one) that you love that fits you right now!!!!!! I find that I eat better and exercise better when I feel good!

I wanted to post a pic but my camera is still giving me trouble.
Further update: bought the size 12 and size 6 (they didn't have 8 or 10). The 12 fits now but is a wee bit loose around the bust; it's actually somewhat flattering on me now but will need some tweaking at the seamstress. I bought the 6 b/c I can amazingly zip it up but it is too small. It may be possible that I wear that one in a few months. I don't know where all the extra weight fit in that dress, maybe covered by the flared skirt (I'm a pear).
Either way, I've got the receipts stapled to the tags and won't be wearing them again until around July when I will decide which one to take back.

Although that sounds like a huge size difference, I once had the same issue. Found the Tracy Feith dress at Target but only in a 1. It zipped - but that didn't mean it fit! I searched eBay for half a year and found my current size 5 that fits great. So, yep 3 sizes apart technically fit on me, too. I hope either one can be tailored to fit you like a dream come wearing day!

based on your situation, i think buying both was a great idea. being that you said a sudden med-based weight gain it is really hard to tell when/how/where you will lose the weight so i think it will be hard to predict where your body will be in july.
