Exactly Jules! Macys also has a different sale all the time- but then they mess with the free ship amount (anywhere from $25-$75 as far as I've seen). Probably works out to same cost in the end!
But people got mad at Pennys when they stopped all that nonsense. Go figure...

Hi Viv, this is intriguing and makes new think of my thrift purchases. Though I love to purge, I have a hard time letting go of quality items. Thrifting allows me to create a subset of clothes I can play with and then discard, so I use this concept to my benefit.

This is a very interesting subject and great discussion points from everyone.
I do believe that the value we give things very much colored by our own individual experiences.
Independent of price I have much more difficulty to pass on items that bring good memories than the actual price I paid for them.
Due to my cultural background I am used to pay full price for things if I like them( in Portugal there were 2 sales seasons), so the purchase has always more to do with how much I like it.

This is really interesting!
I agree with this. Value Attribution.
I love to get luxury items that are on my radar and they still hold a very high value if I get them on sale, (although rare !). I am willing to shell out the full amount because I DO value them more.
Lower priced items, particularly if I get them on sale, hold much less value to me . I don’t like them as much , or value them as much......even if I liked them enough to purchase . In other words ....I like the good/expensive stuff better!
That’s not very nice of me :).

Super interesting - I hope to come back to read all the comments. It's funny - the MORE money I spend on an item, the LESS LIKELY I am to wear it often (for fear of ruining it). This is especially true of high-end jeans (my "nice jeans"). The only exception I can think of is my Barbour waxed jacket - I wear it hard and often. I have found some great sales on bigger ticket items (Fryes) and I feel better wearing them since they were purchased at a lower price point.

Thrifted items are interesting - I feel like I am more thoughtful about adding them, it takes me longer to find something I truly love, often at a lower price point, and I find I wear those items more often. The thrifted items that don't work out are easier for me to pass on than the higher priced retail stuff I bought but don't wear. Easier to let go of a $6 top v. a $60 one, I guess....

Interesting. I don't think I tend to change up wearing based on price, as I'm team wear in general. But I do agree that I'm faster to recycle if I bought on sale, or lower price point, and that makes me wonder if I'm less discerning when I buy based on sale. Worth reviewing.

This got me thinking about my own purchase habits. As of 10 years ago, I am definitely a sales shopper, very rarely buy on full price, but still decent quality. Then again, I was trying to save money and make sure that items do last a year or 2, if not longer, before it is time to replace them. I also have no problem when it come to say goodbye, because usually at that point, it's pretty well worn. I also don't buy too many, or too frequently to begin with, so I don't have a big collection.

Moving to the States has somewhat show me differently the shopping process is. There are more sales, there are more online shops, malls are further away. Yet, I feel differently when I shop. The quality seem different, prices are all over, too many brands, too many choices trying to get your business. It was quite overwhelming. It took me a few years to identify the good from the sneaky shops, even longer for me to accept to get quality, you have to pay more.

I still go for sales. Those I go to tend to have higher price point. I recognize that some brands has perpetual sales, that I don't worry not getting it. I also shop less and with better intentions. It's more rare for me to discard them if they have lower value. I think I should also add on that the Konmarie method works wonder for me, which may explain the way I buy things now.

After typing all this, I'm not even sure I'm on point anymore :0

As few others already mentioned, if I am buying something that is on expensive side to me, I put more thought into it, will carefully consider if I really love and need it, and in the end, I would make less mistakes and value more my more expensive purchases. On the other hand, if something is inexpensive I would get it even if not perfect or really needed and will treat it as easily replaceable and not value it as much as if I had paid more for it. What is solution - buy only items that are on higher end of budget?
And regarding the discounted items - for me it is not the same if something was discounted from 600 to 200 euros or if it was from 60 to 20. First one I would still treat as ‘expensive’ even though it is on sale.

This type of post is fascinating to me. I have yet to be able to read through and absorb all the information here. I marked it as a favorite and intend to revisit it a little later. Thank you for the thought provoking post.
