"Salad Spinner" to hand wash lingerie?!

Did I imagine this? I think I remember someone talking about it here...or maybe not! Maybe a dedicated gadget, maybe just a real salad spinner but XL, but the idea was to hand wash bras in the bowl and then use the spinner function to spin out the excess water. More trouble than machine wash but less trouble than otherwise hand washing.

Ever heard of this? I've checked Amazon and The Laundress and don't see anything so I'm either imagining it or should invent it.

I have a ‘salad spinner’ washer for clothes from the Container Store, I think it was. From my apt. days. It works

Seems like it could be a good choice for delicates....
My washer seems to mangle even the delicate cycle.

I don’t need a salad spinner because I just put bras, camisoles, etc. in a mesh bag, wash in the washing machine, and then hang to dry. It keeps them from getting tied in knots with the other clothes.

Well...this is clever! I use the mesh bag method myself. But then you have to wait until you have a decent load, which can take time...

I use a mesh bag too, but the spin cycle on my washer is so intense...things get knotted up and mangled. This may be a good option for me..

I've always gone the mesh bag/delicate cycle route myself, but I'm on a quest to get some new bras I don't hate and if I ever succeed on the quest I'd like to take the best care of them. The mesh bag is not the greatest at keeping their shape. I do have little mesh "hat box" shaped cages and they are better than mesh bags but I'm still wondering if hand wash is more gentle than that.

I have replied a lot, but it seems like I am always washing bras....and they are such a basic garment and so pricey for the one that is just right...so it is worth it to take good care of them.

I don’t know- I haven’t tried it but I DO spin salad greens, and I feel like the amount of force generated does not seem like enough for actual fabrics, especially spongy linings or straps.
I could do an experiment!

For hand washing I like the bathroom sink and I press partly dry in a towel before hang to dry.

I haven't tried it myself, but this is definitely a thing. There are many videos on youtube for washing clothes in a salad spinner for people who live in small apartments, while camping, off-the-grid living, etc.

Brilliant! Seems a great option if you need it. I use my washer and a mesh bag.

I'm on team mesh bag or handwash and hang up. Sounds like a neat thing though!
I did learn that regular salad spinners are good for spinning out roasted red peppers and tofu too though

I have heard of this but have not tried it. Washed lingerie dries overnight most of the time. I usually hand wash it in the evening and hang on a wooden rack in the garage. The air is very dry usually, so everything dries quickly.. plants need a daily watering. A salad spinner would remove moisture if needed.

Wow, great idea for delicates, but IMO the salad spinner would do actually the best job using it as an alternative to the good old proper hand-washing procedure and NOT for the part of thumble drying or torsioning by hand(?).

Interesting idea. I usually put my delicates in a mesh bag and use the washing machine on the hand wash cycle. Or I wash them by hand.

You are definitely not imagining it; I recall reading about it in the fashion mags back when I used to read them. There is a hand-cranked washer that people use in campers and small apartments. When I handwash, I toss them onto a drying rack with a boot rack underneath to catch the drips. The expensive bras are always synthetics so they dry overnight.

Thanks for bumping this up! It might be helpful for me at the cottage where I don’t have a washer and hand wash some underwear on occasion. Why not?

So funny this got bumped because I let it simmer for awhile and then forgot. But...the most recent issue of Real Simple magazine had a page evaluating Tic Tok trends and supposedly this is one. The magazine tested it and said it worked great.

That was enough to get me interested again and I have one on the way. I was planning to bump the post once I had a chance to try it, but I'll update once I have!

I used to do this for delicate wool items. Wash by sloshing them around very gently in the salad spinner (no real agitation) then spin out the extra water. Works super well. Now I have a front-load washer with a good delicate cycle so I gave up on hand washing most things. But I was considering trying it again after a few sweaters shrank even with the most careful machine washing.

I got a super cheap salad spinner at Ikea and I've had it for years.

Now I have a use for my salad spinner that's been sitting in my cupboard!

(This reminds me, occasionally, I've seen bathing suit spinners at pools. I haven't tried it though. It sounds like a coffee grinder and freaks me out!)

By the way I have this salad spinner (pull handle style). While I’m not super impressed with the quality of the plastic the mechanism works really well - gets going fast without too much effort. I can see it being very effective for this purpose.
