Sailor shorts: How to wear

I got a pair of shorts from a consignment store at the DC gathering yesterday. I know you're going to say "Let's see the shorts on!" but I can't take pictures right now.

I am, as usual, struggling with what tops to wear. I'm going to have to cover most of the button detailing because I can't tuck my tops in, but luckily they have tabs on the hems, sort of like these:

so they are still not completely plain.

I don't know how to wear them without tucking though, and I repeat, emphatically, that I can't tuck. Aside from just the general unflattering nature of tucking on my proportions, it would also give me muffin top. I also gained virtually all the weight I lost back so I'm back to my non-belting ways. I'm not sure what to do. I got these for only $10 to experiment with and based on how many ways I can figure out to wear them I'll have a better idea of whether or not it's worth it to get a pair of nicer ones.

tissue t, knotted at the hip or the hem tucked into one of the pockets.

boyfriend jacket with tank underneath (dressy/nondressy)--i think you already have this in your closet.

Um, what about tucking *ducks thrown lamp* and pairing with a tailored vest that would give you an hourglassy shape and gloss over any muffin-top?

Maya, the tucked top on the other thread looked good, and it's voluminous enough to avoid muffin top. BUT, since you are adamantly against here's my suggestion:

How about a flowy white cotton lace top that isn't too long. I'm thinking something pleated at the yoke that hits at the hip or just above.

Hmm Maya, I think this is almost the same situation as I have with my military pants. I started a thread on that a week ago but it died due to my internet outage. Here it is, there are some neat ideas there: to tuck something of the same color in and then have an extra layer over:

I've been tucking in (honestly because the tag was super itchy and I didn't get around to taking the seam ripper to it until this morning, bwa ha ha). There have been some fitted tops (like this one from anthro:
http://www.mackennaconway.com/.....g-Top1.jpg ), but mostly what I've been doing is tucking in blousy button-downs or tunics--they look super-trim together with the shorts to rein in the volume at the low-waist (and neatly elide any, um, midsection issues). When you don't tuck in, they just look like dark denim shorts, which is fine. I wore them that way today with a long tank and a shorter embellished sweater/vest-y thing. But there's not really a way to show off the button detailing without tucking in. A shorter top wouldn't look right, I don't think, unless it were some floaty high-hip thing. That might work.

What about a flowy top that is closer to skirt length than pants length? Then it can still be left untucked but would be shorter than a regular pant top which would cover the buttons on the sides.
