Rust vs Bronze

Finally got a chance to take pics of the rust version of this Everlane sweater (first one I received was damaged so had to wait for an exchange). Reposting the bronze for comparison. Please disregard my damp hair in #1.

Opinions? The bronze is drapier and shinier; I feel like the rust leans more preppy while the bronze is more luxe? It would be very useful to have a sweater in the red family again and I already have a mustard-y layering top from last year. I'm very torn!

Hmm. I agree with your interpretations. Both look good but somehow the bronze one looks less preppy and more interesting, for want of a better word. But the rust might be more flattering to your skin tone (hard to judge).

I think the bronze looks better with the black jeans.
I wonder if the rust would look better with some other colour of pant.

It may well be that neither one of these is quite right and I might just have to wait around for the perfect colour. I do love the cut of this sweater; it's super easy to wear.

Side note: I'm really loving these cropped bootcut jeans. They are as good with sneakers and oxfords as they are with boots.

Oh, and Smittie, here's a photo I took of the rust one with olive pants. More colour than I feel comfortable wearing! I figured I should do a try-on with the black jeans so I could do a more direct comparison with my photos of the previous sweater.

Well since I don’t understand preppy despite many explanations from you lovely Fabbers and from Google, then I discount that. I think you already returned the bronze? Of course I love bronze but I also love red ( I don’t think this is actually rust) and I think the red does suit your complexion better. So my vote goes to that one. Also, not too much colour with olive pants!

Now that I see the rust again, I really prefer the colour on you. It will go with blue denim really well, too. Maybe better than black.

Suz, you bring up a great point about blue denim. I think I need to update my blue denim capsule! I have two pairs of light wash and two pairs of medium wash, and that's it. Three of them are 501s (different eras) and one pair of vintage Calvin Kleins. For fall/winter, I do have navy blue cords and some plaid wool trousers that should look great with rust. Looking forward to the arrival of these wide leg jeans...

I think both look great. The rust looks more autumn. I like the bronze for all winter wear. I have a one similar as the bronze, I find it great with white for all winter white jeans, etc.

I like the red with your coloring, but think either would work fairly seamlessly with your wardrobe. I am drawn to bronze lately, too - so luxe!

I guess I’m the oddball. I really like the bronze one- the drape, fit, and color. I was actually surprised that they’re the same sweater, because the drape looks so different, even in the model photos. The lighting is quite different in your two pictures, so it’s hard for me to judge how well either works with your skin tone. That said, you can’t go wrong with either one.

Tough call for me because it depends on what you need anc because, hello, my name is Unfrumped and I acquire too many sweaters.

The “red”( I agree not at all “rust”) is cheerful and more casual. and looks happy on you. The “ ochre “ is , as being more neutral- I can’t assess the texture well- is more sophisticated or workwear-like and is a good neutral with black, and might be more versatile. But if you already have something sort of mustard and you
w ant something cheerful, the color is great but you should decide about the cut and drape- not sure why they seem so different.

I like them both...for me the bronze looks more interesting and the rust more expected. So if you’re looking for an everyday easy sweater I’d go with the rust...if you’re willing to take a fashion stretch go with the bronze.

Will you wear it on its own or under a jacket or other layers? I like the rust color but the bronze is a more interesting shape. But the rust would probably layer more easily? Tricky.

Maybe I should be calling it brick instead of rust (rust and bronze are just the retailer's names for these colours). The red is definitely warmer (both more orange and a bit more brown) than any red top I've owned in a while.

I have a feeling that the drape and sheen of the bronze one probably has something to do with the dye used and how it interacts with the fiber. I was at a sheep and wool festival yesterday and noticed that many mustard-coloured yarns had a slightly silkier handfeel than other colours, even when the fiber itself was identical. Very interesting.

I have a feeling the yarn for the bronze sweater above is mercerized and the rust is not. Pure speculation here -- perhaps it's more difficult to get yellow dyes to bond to the fiber? I remember Chris985 had trouble with a mustard sweatshirt over the summer that was not colorfast at all...

The lighting in my house changes pretty drastically this time of year. Those pictures were taken at the same time of day, but a couple weeks apart. Barely October and I'm already missing the sunlight!
