Rust boots-Go for it or wait?

I found the following boots at Ecco, my favourite store.

Points in favour:
- neat rust colour- a 70s colour
- fun 70’s style.
- warm, waterproof. Practical lug sole.
- easy on-off
- works with my navy pea coat, jeans, dresses+leggings combos
- would look good with cute socks (ok, stretching here :-))

Points against:
-mid-calf height means they’re not tall enough to look good with knee or below-the-knee skirts. Would have to wear with leggings and jeans.
- rust colour doesn’t match anything else I have. I do have a cognac bag. Close enough?
- not very elegant (but the counterpoint is: what snowboots is?)

I would like to make a rational decision about this, and would like to let the lovely forum members be my head!

They also have the boot in black, which I don’t like nearly as much.

I could wait for a taller boot. I don’t mind waiting.

I really like them - especially in rust, which you could use as a neutral of sorts. Works with navies, blacks, greys, denim etc. And I disagree with not seeing them working with skirts . Would you wear them inside at work, or take them off when you get there? I think with tights and a knee-length skirt they'd be great !

These boots are similar to my Frye Campus boots - similar height, color, and rugged aesthetic. The significant difference is the Fryes are not waterproof. Here’s a picture of my Campus boots with leggings and a denim dress. The boots are just called dark brown. The thrifted Coach bag is called British Tan. I consider these colors, including cognac, to be interchangeable.

JAileen -- Your jean skirt look is exactly what I was thinking of, including some sort of luggage-style bag.
Indeed, I am looking for something along the same lines as the Frye. I believe AliceWonderland also has the Fryes. The colour and ruggedness really caught my eye.

I really like them and can see them working well with knee length skirt/ dresses of the casual kind. And definitely with jeans as well. I think they'll work with quite a lot in your closet and I agree with JAileen that they will coordinate well with cognac.

Oh, they're great! Love that rust colour. I'd wear them with knee-length dresses without hesitation. I suppose if they hit you right at mid-calf it might not be the most flattering, but otherwise I think they would look fine. Do you know the name/model number? I don't see them at all on the US Ecco website.

I don't think that everything has to tick all the boxes. I used to look for items that would go with skirts and jeans, work for office and weekend, and match everything in my closet. And of course it was impossible to find something like this. What I am trying to say, I think this boots can have place in your wardrobe even though they have some perceived cons.

Suz: Yes, I think casual might be the key. I tried these on with a pencil skirt and it didn't work.

LaPedestrienne: I think they're a bit shorter than mid-calf, so not so bad, flattery-wise. I guess I'm used to seeing myself in sleeker tall boots. The page is on the Canadian site: https://ca.shop.ecco.com/en_CA.....olor=51250

Anchie: Thank you. You're right that not everything has to match everything else, I need to remember that. Part of the reason you buy different boots and shoes is for the variety.

smittie, from your original post it sounds like you envision these boots as being mainly for casual wear. Please correct me if I'm wrong. But if that's correct then I think the question is how do they fit with your new dresses/leggings formula for weekend? I think they would work great (and they are very nice boots), but are YOU excited to wear them with your new weekend things?

I recently added these boots to my wardrobe. They have a slightly similar look but are more rugged looking than yours. I wear them with leggings/tights and skirts that end above my knee. They felt too heavy when wearing skirts longer than that. Mine work best with casual outfits and I wear them when I’m going to be doing a lot of walking.

I love both the black and rust colors in your boot. The rust has a slightly Western vibe to me. If the rust is pulling at your heart just make sure you have the correct support acts - handbag, scarf, gloves, hat or whatever you need to pull the look together. Looking forward to seeing your outfits!

Sarahd8: You are good at pinpointing the crux of the matter: yes, I need something for the weekends, and need something to complement my casual dress-leggings combo. I would rather not feed in to jeans again. Even though jeans are good in the weekend, I feel better in non-pants silhouettes.

I do not need these for dressy outfits, you’re right, so there is no need to try and find something to pair with pencil skirts.

Greycat6: thanks for your examples. I was kind of thinking about something with a fluffy top portion, like what you have. As you say, it would look good with dresses and leggings for the weekend.

Also, I don’t really have the support act to go with these boots, so I will have to think about that. I like the western vibe of them though.

I like the boots - and I agree with Anchie that not everything needs to go with everything. I have made this mistake with boots - now I add one pair a year and accept that sometimes I have perceived gaps - ie I don't have black dressy boots (but I do have dressier navy boots and dressy black shoes and dressier camel boots so it is not as though I don't have options).

In your case if you want casual boots to wear with skirts and dresses I would see if these fit that gap. If not I would hold off and find a pair that do.

I do see these working with some dresses and skirts but not all. I see them working well with jeans and cords - but if you want to move away from these they might not be the right option.

Those are beautiful boots. I like the contrast trim and stitching. I think it is good you are thinking of all the practicalities, like them being waterproof and easy in/out. In this case I think you will wear them plenty. It’s nice to have boots of different heights. I have one pair this height and it’s actually the pair I wear most frequently. I wear them with knee length dresses all the time. It works with shift and a-line dresses but not with pencil skirts. It’s important that the shaft be the right circumference so that leggings and jeans will fit in them and so it flatters the calf.

I like the boots but if you are moving towards skirts/dresses more than jeans I would be concerned about getting enough wear out of them. These would be great with shorter skirts but, to my eye, knee high boots (or short sock boots) work better with skirts that are below the knee. I think you have a few of those. Would you, ideally, like to have some casual boots to wear with them?

I like them but wonder about wearing them with dresses and skirts. Ottawa gets pretty cold in the winter. I would go for knee-high boots if I were wearing a dress.

To all: Thank you for your thoughts. They're helpful in clarifying mine. Based on this thread, I will hold off on these boots.

I decided to come up with an 'actual need statement' to keep me on track, because gear is difficult for me to buy.

Actual Need Statement for Weekend Wear
================================
I need SNOW boots that work with my green puffer. Slip on-off.
I need washable, above-knee dresses and tunics.
I need thick LEGGINGS.

Sal: Yes, the 'actual vs. perceived need' conundrum plagues me.
Shevia: Thanks! Yes, I think they'd work well with jeans.
Alice: I think you're right about the length too. Very practical, and when I think of a solid winter boot, this seems to be a preferred length for me for ease of on-off but also warmth and ability to keep out the elements.
Brooklyn: You're right, but for weekends, I've decided to stick to shorter hemlines, so a shorter boot would work.
Angie: You're right too, but my immediate need are snow boots.
Style Fan: You're right about the cold. But I think I could do a mid-calf boot with thick leggings. Mid-calf boots seem ideal for as an outdoor winter boot. But maybe there is a tall boot that's easy on off. See finds.

Smittie, thick leggings would work. I have a pair from Lole that are fleece lined. Super warm. I also have an old pair from Lululemon that are no longer available but I saw some in Lulu that looked even warmer.

I like your thinking, Smittie. I couldn't help chiming in about the skirt and short rugged boots, though. I recently got this pair of Born boots (Finds), and I wear them with tights and a slim midi-skirt and quite like the look. Kind of surprised me. It's not a traditional pairing, but it does help casualize the skirt, which I like. The other components of the outfit are in Finds, too; it's a work outfit.
