Rosamund Pike's wardrobe in I CARE A LOT

Watched the (very) dark comedy I CARE A LOT on NetFlix last night. Truly disturbing topic and premise, however, a real highlight is Rosamund Pike's wardrobe (and her performance). One of the outfits reminded me so much of Angie - a yellow pants suit with white platform sneakers, sunglasses, no accessories! Lots of bright, primary colors. The whole film is very stylized. Considering how unpleasant the subject was, it is a feat that it turned out to be a good film.

YES. Saw the trailer a few days ago, Laurie. Very macabre topic, but Rosamund has sensational style. I LOVE the yellow suit with the white sneakers! I had my hair like that in the '90s too. Fun flashback

Watching the Handmaid's Tale now. Good grief. THAT's extra macabre and anxiety provoking. But extremely good, and very deserving of its many awards.

We just got Hulu a few weeks ago, primarily to watch In & Of Itself, which is really wonderful. So, HandMaid's Tale is on the list, but I find myself dragging my feet....

Ok - I watched half the movie last night (took me awhile to find it - it's not on Canadian Netflix) and I want her wardrobe and hair. The costume designer for that movie did a terrific job. That yellow suit and white sneakers outfit - FANTASTIC. She's quite something in this movie - looking forward to finishing it on Friday . Weird way to watch a movie - but *shrugs* .

Off to look up In & Of Itself.

Can't wait for the new season of Handmaid's. Airs later this year sometime .

Laurie and LisaP, we dragged our feet on the Handmaid's Tale too - just because it's extremely disturbing. But now I get why it's held in such high regard. Elizabeth Moss in brilliant, and the tale is very, very compelling.

I guess because it's an iconic piece of literature from an iconic female writer, and Canadian to boot, I love it for it's familiarity (shot in Toronto ) and quality of production .I find it quite "real" , which is interesting and thought-provoking .

Handmaid’s Tale is often hard to watch, but exceptionally well done!

A friend of mine is a film critic and I am not sure how much I want to watch this after reading her review, but I do like some really dark humor...

Rosamund Pike's wardrobe in I Care A Lot is pretty fab and the yellow pantsuit with sneakers is my favorite look. As the story moved along, I started getting bored with the very dark humor. Rosamund is a lot more believable as Marla Grayson than she was as Marie Curie in Radioactive

The costume designer did a fab job. I'm not really into movies or series like this unless it has a interesting twist or ending. I did watch to the end but I did not care for the movie at all

That impeccable wardrobe: a reflection of the character's aspirations, another area carefully crafted to augment her deceptions, or both? I was not a fan of the movie's theme and found it cliche, yet the fashion really caught my eye.

Watching The Handmaid's Tale. Phew. Haunting and at the time I was doing so, doubly haunting. Very well done. Elizabeth Moss was brilliant.

Eliza, Janet and Lisa P, AGREED. As a women, The Handmaid's Tale is very hard to watch. Gruesome and diabolical. But extremely well done! Fun Toronto backdrop.

@fashintern, I did not like the movie. My husband had experience with guardianship for his parents. His father refused to allow him to be his guardian, but accepted a paid guardian (who was wonderful, actually)...ugh, and he was his mother's guardian. We learned a lot about how powerful guardianship is at that time. So, I found the premise truly horrifying! When it turned into the action portion it felt pretty absurd, so it was more of a curiosity to see how it would end. I didn't buy into the character and do agree with the critic's point that there was not enough back story to explain the meanness.

I should start another thread about In & Of Itself, though....that is a trip.

My take on it is that it's a dark comedy.That's it. The use of props (smoothies, fire extinguishers ) as "weapons" and the costumes (not just Marla's) nodded to this. A la Coen Brothers etc. I thought it was quite hilarious at times, albeit preposterous . And my now MIL was in guardianship (although it's not private here - it's a government agency) and I'm not a completely insensitive person.

Laurie, I know that there are cases of guardianship being abused (if you can believe the WSJ), though probably not individuals setting that up as their career.
LisaP, comedy is a twist I hadn’t considered—don’t get that vibe from the trailer. Maybe I’d have to invest the time in watching to see what you mean. But comedy or not, a movie that rotates around the point that this woman is a heartless bitch because she can be just sounds more misogynistic than I can get into.

My son has read and watched The Handmaid’s Tale for school. Talking about its themes, I sometimes can’t tell if he’s referring to the movie or something I’ve told him about my life/upbringing.

LOL! I looked at Vogue’s review of the Golden Globes fashion, and was kind of incredulous - except for Rosamund! She kind of summarized the times with her wackadoodle outfit and presentation! Though pretty or interesting, everything else feels kind of off.

I have to admit that I can't even remember the wardrobe from "I Care A Lot" because I spent the entire film in a crazy state of anxiety. This might not be the time for me to watch dark comedy.
