Rome travel capsule in pictures ETA Review

Packing for seven days, as minimal as possible (carryon). There's rain predicted for a few days, but the sneakers are fine for rain in the city. Taking an umbrella in the backpack. I had the new jeans and my favourite older one taken in at the waist last week. Now they fit without a belt!

I think boots are going to be too warm, so I'm packing my Oxfords as a second option. I'm still unsure if I should take the plaid skirt in addition to the floral dress. What do you think? The skirt with the green wool pullover is a comfortable favourite if probably rather warm, the burgundy turtleneck not so much. I wonder if I should even pack the turtleneck because I don't wear it very often, but it's another thinner option next to the breton shirt and works well over the jeans.

The scarf was a YLF Secret Santa present, by the way. Lightweight, packs away to nothing and when worn with the funnel neck of the coat done up quite toasty.

What do you think? Would you pack the skirt or not? Thoughts on the turtleneck? Any other thoughts? Thanks.

I count 5 tops, 2 bottoms if you take the skirt (unless there is more than one pair of jeans), and a dress. If you wear a different bottom than jeans in transit, I think you could get away without the skirt. I just did a week long trip with 3 bottoms, 5 tops, 2 sweaters and 2 jackets and it was nearly perfect, but I could have left the jeans behind. But the shoes look cute with the burgundy turtleneck. Do you need to upgrade it or do you not like the color near your face?

(PS I had no idea from your WIWs that your clothes were so colorful!)

Actually there are two jeans, one is a bit darker than the other. Both are basically slim fit / relaxed skinnies. The turtleneck is a rather slouchy fit which I don't like as much. But the bigger problem is that the neck is slightly too long for me which makes me fuss. I also have another breton shirt I could take instead, but that one wouldn't work with the skirt. But maybe I don't need the skirt anyway with two pair of jeans. I can always rewear the dress. Oh and I'm going to wear the jeans with the wool pullover to start with.

(These pics were taken with my phone and the sun was out. I think if you imagine the colors toned down a bit but more vibrant than my WIWs you have it right.)

Thanks Angie. You're probably right, it doesn't take up that much room anyway. I will see how it looks when it all goes into the bag. I'm still unsure about the turtleneck / second breton shirt.
And yes I'm going to be warm enough, my bigger fear is being too warm! I'm going to take my wool silk mix undershirts and wear my Icebreaker leggings as pajamas, I can layer those under the jeans if necessary. But I shouldn't need them.

Looks like a great capsule, I like the colors and also thumb up on the skirt for Italy. I'm assuming you are bringing hats and gloves in case? I remember a lot of standing in line for hours in Rome and if it's chilly it can soon get really chilly just standing there, but you should be good with extremities covered. With the turtleneck would you need to wash a shirt if you didn't bring it? If so I would.

I <3 your Hogwarts tee, what house are you? Pottermore sorted me into Ravenclaw.

Rabbit thanks! I think I'll pack the skirt, even if I only end up wearing it with the wool pullover. Or I could do the Hogwarts tee with it too I guess. I actually hadn't thought about a hat and gloves no. It's rather warm and I only ever wear hats when it's snowing or below zero and it's going to be much warmer. But my coat has nice big pockets where you can keep your hands warm! Although I might take my cashmere wristwarmers - with them you can still use phone and camera without a problem. And I don't think I'd need to wash without the turtleneck - I'd still have two tees (plus cardigan), one wool pullover, the longsleeved tee plus the dress (with cardigan). And I definitely plan to rewear stuff. I might wash my underlayers in the sink though.

And thanks on the tee... I'm a Gryffindor.

I'd maybe exchange one of the jeans for the skirt ... Because I like traveling light light. I'd maybe leave the turtleneck since you have the scarf, take the Breton and the green jumper... Is that a cardigan I see also? Every thing looks nice together; I really like the jumper.

I think everything looks great! I'm not a very light packer myself, so take this with a pinch of salt, but I would take the plaid skirt a turtle neck The colours are all lovely!

Thanks Rachylou! I'm definitely taking both jeans, because if the weather is bad I'm going to be in my sneakers all the time and then I need some options. But I'll take the skirt too. Not the turtleneck though, I switched that one for the black top I wore to my dad's birthday. That way I have another way to wear the skirt and it doesn't take up much room. And yes, that's my grey cardigan.

This looks like some great packing with lots of options. Plan to buy a spring/summer scarf in Italy. They are very inexpensive and a fun souvenir of your trip. They take up no room and can change an outfit.

The skirt looks so fun yet practical with tights so I would take it.

You got the TB bag! Really nice. I like the small (subtle) square print on it.
That material is like iron.

I love this post. I'm trying to be more disciplined about planning outfits for travel (instead of giving myself "options") and this was inspirational. Your trip looks like so much fun!

Thought I'd do a short review about my travel capsule. I was dressed more or less fine. There was a downpour directly after the arrival at the airport there which made me worry that I had packed the wrong shoes, but that was the only time it was raining that badly. I was fine with the wool coat, although I sometimes had to carry it over my arm in the sun because it was quite warm. I didn't wear the skirt at all, but I wore the dress twice and jeans on the rest of the days. I was fine with the tops I had, but I washed my underlayers in the sink - same as my socks because I wore tights less often than I thought. And I totally loved my backpack, it's really awesome for travel. Another favourite was the pink scarf - I ended up wearing it everyday and it added some lovely color and packed away well into the backpack. I think I'd pack the same, minus the skirt and black top which I didn't wear either.

I would have thought that a black top would come in handy on a trip. Was it too warm of a layer?

Thanks AJ! I mostly packed the black top to wear with the skirt which I didn't wear. But maybe it was also because it was sleeveless and I preferred my tees with sleeves where I could layer my short sleeved wool silk mix tee under.

They're introducing a new fabric in April which is basically what I have but with grey checks instead of white. I'm thinking of getting a "Halcyon" Side Effect if they offer it, to use in combination with my backpack and on its own. They have a lot of pictures in the forums, if you're interested in any of the products.

Your capsule worked out incredibly well, especially if there were only two things you didn't wear. It's impossible to use everything you pack since you never really know what the weather will do.

Thanks Elle. Agree, you just don't know about the weather. And it truly was allover the place on most days - it was coat open/buttoned/off, scarf in backpack or not, cardigan off with coat on...
