RIP Sinead and thanks for inspiring women to shave their heads

I remember the first time I heard her version of Nothing Compares 2 U. On the car radio, in Florida. I seriously thought I was going to have to pull over.

And the video! For you younguns, here it is. In 1990 - NO ONE looked like that. NO ONE sounded like that.

The recent documentary about her is also riveting.

You'll be missed, Sinead.

The Lion & the Cobra hit our college radio station when it was released in 1987 and we had a collective swoon. It wasn’t like anything else, really. (We were already playing female artists like Siouxsie & the Banshees, Patti Smith, and Kate Bush.) She made a huge impact.

I know she’d been deeply traumatized by the suicide of her son not so long ago, and she has battled mental illness. I hope that somehow she is at peace now. Very sad for the loss of her voice in this world.

Wow, I had not yet heard the news. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She was immensely talented and stood strong for what she believed in, but she was a tortured soul. I, too, hope she is at peace. My heart goes out to her children, especially her 16 year old. There's never a good age to lose a parent, but I can speak from experience that 16 is a tough age.

My hairdresser looks like a young Sinéad. Wears her hair that way a lot...and looks every bit as beautiful that way. She was an original for sure and will be missed.

I know that cause of death has not been released, but she suffered from bipolar and had been wrecked over her 17 year old son taking his life last year. Given that it is only 18 months since his passing, and her grief seems not to have subsided, I have to wonder if she willingly followed him. I don't mean to be indelicate, and perhaps it is in poor taste to speculate; if that is the case, I apologize. It is just such a tragedy to lose someone so young.

Just devastating. I was teeny when her first album came out, and I grew up listening to her. She was an icon throughout my childhood and youth, always fully and unapologetically herself. What a loss.

I will miss her amazing voice, bravery and uncompromising integrity. This one hits hard for me, she was someone I expected to grow old with. RIP.

She was really ahead of her time and often so misunderstood. Not easy. What a voice, full of feeling that can just break a heart. The doc on her is so good. May you find peace, Sinead.

One of the strongest concepts for a song I've ever heard: how you feel in the two weeks after you lose the one you love passionately. I did not know she died, but I'm not around TV a lot. Sounds like she was too young.
