revisiting the Eliza J dress... now in eggplant

While the cobalt dress got enthusiastic thumbs up here, something about it kept gnawing at me. I decided it was the color.... now before I say this I want to make it clear that Laura rocked the cobalt and it was because of her pictures that I ordered the dress... but on me, the cobalt felt a bit.... electric?..... old?.... high society?.... lady who lunches? something I couldn't quite put my finger on, but I felt that I might be hesitant to wear it. I ordered it in the eggplant in a size up, because I also felt that the girls could use just a smidge more room.

so, here are both dresses. I much prefer the eggplant on me... but I fear that it looks a little big (although it feels great) what do you think regarding both color and fit of both dresses.

I like both colours, but I can understand why you would like the eggplant better. Is that dress a different size? From the pictures the blue one fits you better.

Okay, I think I was right that objectively, eggplant is a more suitable color for you. But the COBALT! It is none of those things you felt, at least in the pictures. It is truly electrifying. Maybe you feel like the color is just too attention-grabbing for you? I firmly believe you should rock it.

But if you can't bring yourself to feel right in it, then the eggplant is just lovely with your coloring, and to be honest, I would have picked it for you if the cobalt were not the other option.

I LOVE the eggplant on you, although the cobalt is also nice! I think the cobalt fits better though. Maybe order the eggplant one size down?

Both are fab, but the eggplant looks wonderful with your coloring and feels more "you." Good shopping instincts!

I loved your cobalt dress so much the first time you showed it, I ordered it for myself! It hasn't arrived yet. It doesn't strike me at all as "old lady" or "ladies who lunch" (obviously, or I wouldn't have ordered it). (I'm eagerly waiting for the package!)

So I think I like the cobalt better, but the eggplant is also great. If you feel more fab in that color, eggplant it is! The cobalt is a more distinctive dress; I think that's why I like it. Can you edgify it?

The size of the cobalt is definitely better, order again in that size if you want the eggplant......

Your girls and their needs notwithstanding ;), the cobalt seems to be a more flattering size to my eye, and the eggplant really is a lovely color on you. Not that the cobalt isn't, but it would be a shame for you to keep it and WISH you felt comfortable wearing it, but keep passing it by in your closet because you're not.

Kim, I think I am also seeing what you see. I want to LOVE it but something is just not right. The girls look very constricted in the blue and the eggplant looks too big.

Kim, did you try a petite in the bigger size? Or would the length be too short? I had to size up to 8P to get some chest room, and that gave me more waist surrender, which you know I don't mind.

how does the top half of the eggplant seem to fit? I wonder if I did some nipping in of the seams from the waist down....

Una.. the petite would be too short and most likely be tight in the armpits.

So could you visit a tailor and ask her if and at what price (s)he can alter the eggplant dress so it fits better?

I think I understand your misgivings. While both colors are beautiful, and lovely on you, this just may not be your style. I'd return the dresses and buy something you really love, that you don't have any doubts about wearing. And that fit you better. The 12 looks too big, and if you are uncomfortable in the 10, then you'll find you never pull it out of the closet to wear.

Hmm, I'm with Kate: if you have misgivings about both, then you probably won't wear either. However, if you keep one I'm voting for the eggplant, as it's a lovely shade on you.

As an aside, I also purchased the Eliza J dress and found that I had to choose between giving the girls some breathing room (the larger size) or having waist-definition (the smaller size). There's also the option of having the larger size tailored to fit your waist, but the dress lining would make it a pricey alteration.

I can't see any fit issues in the cobalt. [shrug] I love both colors. But Kate is right.

so here's the plan: I'm going to return both and as soon as the eggplant is available in the 10, I'm going to snatch it up. There is a vertical seam that goes down the side of the bust that can easily be let out 1/2 inch to allow for a bit of breathing room for the girls. That would most likely be the easier route than trying to alter the bottom half.

I'm also toying with the idea of making a pattern before returning and see about making it myself... is that ethically wrong? I could do it for less than half the price most likely.

I don't think there's an ethical problem with that at all, unless you plan to market and sell the dress you make as your own design.

I agree that the smaller size seems to fit you better, but I totally understand the need for a little room for the girls, bra twin! I think both colors look marvelous on you.

BTW, you are so pretty! What a great smile.

I like the fit of the cobalt and color of the eggplant. I know exactly what you mean regarding cobalt as I feel the same way in the color even though it makes me glow and I love it on others.

"Lady who lunches" describes it exactly.

QM, I think that's a great idea....either to alter the 10 or to make a pattern. Both colors really look wonderful on you.

Thugh, I can also feel what you say about that (royaL) blue....I also feel the same, when trying to put on something of that colour...But I'm blonde...and I think this colour has to be paired/bookend with black...now, you are a brunette, I think it works for you! (eggplant would be also fab, but size down, pls: tell the girls to shut up:-))

I love you in that cobalt, but I think I might lean toward the eggplant too. When a color is as bold as that cobalt, I may not always feel up to it. . .

The 10 has a more flattering fit than the 12.

If you DO make a pattern, I think you've given this one every opportunity to fit you and if it doesn't, then it can certainly inspire you to try your own!

Late to the party but I can't resist. I love both colors on you, but eggplant seems like much safer choice and blue is just smashing on you. I'd get that one over eggplant. It's more special.

I think that is why I'm shying away from the cobalt. I want this to be an all purpose dress and I fear that I would be hesitant to wear the cobalt in more casual ways and more than once a month. The purple seems more casual to me and I think I'd be more likely to wear it both dressed up and for casual days.

It looks like I'm going to have to alter the eggplant one as the 10 hasn't been available on line for over a week. I'll do some basting and get input from everyone.

How about the eggplant dress with a cobalt scarf? That blue is such a great color on you. You glow and your eyes look denim blue.
