Review of gap sbf shorts and a ? for Ceit

Had a few minutes today while waiting for my watch battery to be replaced so I popped into gap to try a couple of things (and I bought a dolman sweater).

Anyway they had the new sbf shorts so I gave them a try. I found them to be less baggy/slouchy than the sbf jeans, and the crotch is not very dropped. They are comfy. In the photo I'm wearing the same size as my sbf jeans, so 1 size up and you can see they fit tighter. My regular size fit too but it was a very fitted look. The cuffs are stitched up but it would be easy to take out the stitch and unroll them to get maybe 1.5" extra. I am not buying because I prefer my shorts more flared but I think these would be nice if you like a straight leg short.

Also, Ceit, if you have a moment. I tried on the broken in straight khakis but they did not have the linen version which is what I was really interested in. Are the pockets in the linen ones the same? I liked the khakis but I hated the front pockets, which bulged out on me even though the pants were loose. Also, is the fit on the linen comparable to the khaki? Thanks!

They have angled pockets like the khakis, but honesty I really like the linen ones more. I took my actual size in both but the linen ones drape better and are much comfier. I don't find the pockets to gap or gape on them.

Thanks, Ceit! Yeah, I wonder if the softer fabric on the linen would make the pockets not stick out as much. I think the problem is just that they are right at my widest point, and the fabric of the khakis is a bit stiff so the pockets don't lie flat.

Yes, I think you are right -- the khaki pockets do flap a bit on me but it doesn't bother me too much as everything is super slouchy on them. The linen ones I do recommend you try!

Diana- chiming in to confirm what Ceit said. The pockets on the broken in linen pants are very well-behaved and the pockets on khakis are my enemies. I love everything about these pants. Called the Gap and did find out that the white linen ones are indeed sheer. I have the black and I am not sure I'll get through the summer with only one pair.

I hear you, Ceit. I was out in 80 degree sunshine wearing jeans today and wishing I had these on instead. I wondered if I'd like the olive, which I rarely wear and it definitely can't be near my face. Thought it might work with Angie's suggestions to pair with white and brick red as a nod to her post on cargo pants, if i remember correctly. May just get another black pair. Being able to wear these long really works, so I appreciate your suggestion.

Thanks! I'm going to go ahead and order the linen ones in green. I'm going to get Talls like Ceit so that I can wear them long.

One more question before I order: do the linen pants stretch out at all? I liked the fit of the larger size khakis I tried but it was quite loose and I wouldn't want them to stretch out much more than that. Also, Ceit, do the talls fit the same width-wise as the regulars? I know Gap's petites and regulars are the same width-wise, so I'm assuming the talls are too.

Such a shame that the white are sheer. I am almost tempted to order them anyway to see in person how sheer.

I didn't find they stretched, and while it is the middle of the night so I can't check, I think the khakis I have in 10 and the linen ones I know for sure are 8 Tall. The Talls I think are the same width.

(Ok I just snuck out of bed and checked (darn insomnia) and the khakis I have in 10 and the linen is 8 Tall.)

Diana, in case it helps, the gardening outfit in my blog is the khakis rolled up, and then there is that post with the linen pants.

Suz- I asked if they were see-through and if the pockets were visible. The woman I spoke with passed the question on and the answer was essentially sorry for any disappointment, but these pants, like most white linen, are sheer. Made me decide not to order, but if you do go ahead, let us know.
I know you aren't into black. In case it helps, the black is black, but a bit faded and therefore less "harsh". I think they may be a linen cotton blend, which upped my hopes for the white ones being less sheer.

Mine have not stretched either. They are a much softer fabrication than traditional khakis and don't feel like a synthetic.

Hey Diana - I don't know anything about the line pants, but your experience with the bf shorts was the same as mine! Not near as baggy as I had expected!

Hi - here are some pics of the linen pants in white. The pockets do show through but it's not a deal breaker for me since these will be casual weekend pants with shirt left out or semi-tucked. And I need pockets!

BTW the pockets also show in the back, but it was hard to capture via iPhone.

Thanks, Kristin, for the photos! I really appreciate seeing them and I'm sure others do too. I really dislike pants seams and pockets that show through so I was not considering white at all... (seriously, I find almost all white denim too transparent so you can imagine white linen has no chance in my world!). But that's just my own little weirdness. The fit looks great on you!

I appreciate the photos, Kristin. Love the pants on you. Did you size up? I was not so concerned about the pockets being visible as I was using that variable as way to gauge sheerness and skin visibility. Transparency can be subjective and hard to see in photos. I think wearing the pants looser can help with that a bit. I would love these in white if my skin and undergarment were not obvious. As Angie suggests routinely for white jeans, sizing up here may reduce cling for me and create some desired "mystery". Thanks again for posting.

I just checked again. Black underwear is a no-go with these white pants, but nude would be fine. Skin visibility seems low to me, but YMMV.

I wear a 4P in the broken-in khakis and these are also a 4P. So I didn't really size up. I ordered the 6P just to be sure, and those were so baggy on me that I decided to stick with the 4P.

Kristin, thanks for posting these -- I am more tempted...I don't think I'd mind that degree of show-through for the purpose or could always take the pockets out.

Suz, yes, it depends on your tolerance for the pocket visibility issue. I hate that on white jeans, but in this case I don't mind because these pants are pretty comfy and will be nice for summer.

But if you're a person like Diana who dislikes pocket visibility, then these would not be a good choice. The pockets are visible for sure.

I thought about removing them, but I like having pockets, and also
you would have to remove the back pockets, too, which might be weird plus more expensive to alter.

I thought I would let people know that after seeing Kristin SF's post (many thanks for photos and info), I took advantage of the Memorial Day pricing and ordered the white linen broken in pants, as well as the olive ones. I got the olive in my usual size and the white in a size bigger. I will happily wear the white ones and don't find them too sheer. The olive is a true olive green, not toned down by blue, brown or gray tones like some "olive" clothes are. It is not my favorite color and I can't wear it by my face, but after a very hot, early heat wave here, I decided how valuable this fabric alternative is to me. Being able to roll the hems or leave them long is great. I have decided to keep both of them for now: may consider swapping out the olive for another black (almost charcoal) pair.

Yes, I was sort of surprised by the olive green, it's much greener than I was expecting. But, I had the same thought - the fabric is so nice and cool in the summer, that I kept them anyway.

Argh. So I ordered the green linen pants in an 8tall, same as Ceit. I guess my butt is bigger than her's since I thought they pulled a bit at the hips. Fine, exchanged for 10tall. Well I got them today and I think they must be missized since the 10s are way smaller than the 8s were. Like, can't button them small. Grrr... At this rate I'll never get a pair that fits.
