I know mini skirts don't get a lot of love on the forum but I thought I'd give my review in case anyone is looking a cinq a sept. There are many mini's that match their blazers, so here goes, hope it's helpful. Quality is the heavy cotton tweed to match the jacket. Skirt is actually a-line with a faux button front so the bottom is sewn and the plaket is also sewn shut so no worries about gapping. There is a side zip and hooks and fully lined. Gold buttons to match fringe at the top and bottom is short and nice. Lies flat. Skirt is finger tip length on 5'3" me. As per the only review, I sized up one and two sizes to sit the skirt slightly lower to get more length. Jacket is size 4, the 6 skirt is just slightly roomy and sits low waist but the 8 was huge. Already wrapped up. The skirt is super cute on it's own. I tried it on with black tights and fitted black suede knee boots and OTK boots. Looks great with the jacket and lots of my other black jackets and sweaters. So other than it's mini limiting height, it looks to be versatile. The a line means I can stride and move easily. I would recommend one size up for length and ease. You don't want your mini riding up for sure. I'm a sucker for a suit so I'm keeping it, although I think I'll wear the pieces more as separates than together.
On a petite such as yourself, a short skirt is longer, so shorter proportions tend to work well! Enjoy, and I bet Mr. Gryffin is happy with the skirt too!
Angie - absolutely if DH had his way it would be short skirts, low midrise contoured skinnies for that long torso/waist, turtlenecks fitted (yeah that’s a real thing for him) and stockings/tights - loves leg wear. Got to keep the boy happy. We will be married 40 yr this December!
Sounds great! At just under 5 foot 2 I also like the proportions of minis on me. I don’t own many shorter skirts or dresses any more, a small number, and do prefer tights with them. My bare legs and knee shape are not as pretty as they once were, looking at old photos!
Congrats on your upcoming 40th!! Mr. Suz and I are about to celebrate our 25th (of marriage) but 34th of being together. We can hardly believe it.
I love this suit for you! The skirt is adorable. Very 60s mod, which I happen to love. If I could wear minis well, I'd be so tempted! I am sure this looks fantastic on. you.
I always think a mini with black tights is such a cool and classic look.
What Suz said. Love short skirts with tights, though I can’t really wear a mini. Probably my pencil skirt days are past as well, though id be tempted by the right length & fit , but do t have enough times I’d wear it. But because they were cool- weather/ black tights items for me, the most versatile fabrics were prints or false plains with black in them. It’s just great you got the suit, which I think also gives a good balance with the mini- length. And such versatile pieces that are a slam- dunk as separates.
Jenni - I bet you’d rock a mini. Plus tights cover a multitude of sins. But I do think we petite girl do well with skirts just above the knee etc for a long leg look.
Suz - Thank you. The years go soooo fast. I remember my parents 25 seemed so long. Ours flew right by. It’s awesome when you marry your bff soul mate. I do think the mini has a 60’s vibe esp with tights. Kind of twiggy. But I also love a mini shift style so definitely part of my eras. Congrats to you and Mr Suz too.
Unfrumped - I think you could rock a mini and pencil. But o do think our comfort zones change and you should wear what feels right. I think with pencils I look for shirts not pegged too much under the bum. They can feel too sexy. I did buy the theory leather pencil skirt last year. It’s not too fitted but perfectly fitted if that makes any sense. Also one from Boss the vilea lined. Both ladylike flattering but less vavoom. But that’s a tricky silhouette for sure.
Kkards - you make me laugh! I’ve actually been looking for a skort but didn’t find one this year. Okay the key. Black tights with black bodysuit. That’s the only way I wear minis. I don’t do flasher and I move around a lot. So I’m always sure I’m covered.
Thank you for reviewing the skirt. I bought the jacket and have already worn it twice. Go team wear! The length of the skirt has been holding me back from buying it, but I’m 5’3” so based on your review it might work for me too . I hope you enjoy wearing the jacket as much as I do.
Jamie - Thank you. You are such a sweetheart!
Rock - ooh congrats on the maiden voyages of your blazer. It’s still much to hot by me. Only the lightest blazers right now. So I’m hoping by mid sept to have it in rotation. I have about and 1” plus on you. Skirt, and I have long arms, at least 1.5” below fingertip. It will still definitely mini but with my above styling they always feel more modest. Do to the heaviness of the material I though skirt looked best with fitted knee or OTK boots but you can totally rock it with a short bootie, court heel, kitten or honestly a loafer or Oxford for fun. I liked it best as a suit or with a fitted blazer. Works well with a short jacket or cutaway or long imho but I have pretty 90’s taste. I was surprised that the skirt sold out much faster than the jacket. I didn’t expect that. I did buy the one size up for length which I do like. I find that prevents ride up. Good luck and lmk if you try it. So glad you are loving the jacket!!
That's a gorgeous set and some great insights on fitting a skirt. Thanks for sharing. And congratulations on the upcoming 40th anniversary, that's wonderful!
