Returning my imaginary life. - YouLookFab Forum

Dear YLF,
This week of dressing dresses has opened my eyes to some impulsive and very imaginary life targeted purchases.
My aim is always to have a small , functional and conscious wardrobe.After all in this post I described myself as a Vibrant classical sustainable traveler.
And I ended up being nothing like that.Well, almost.

My wardrobe needed some substitutions and upgrading some aspects of it because the last time I did a big overall I was a new mother and was just beginning to learn some things about fashion, how to dress yourself and even some things about myself.
Right now I am looking closely at my 40's and some things just didn't make sense anymore. Also my dressing personality changed and I want things in life and intend to pursue them that I didn't know at the time of the other big haul.
But suddendly I am confronted with a trip and get the panic of having nothing to wear.So I went and bought.
And I discover that when I buy for the unknown I make more mistakes because although I was able to pass the black sling pointy shoes and search for pointy white pumps a la Angie for my actual life, I bought 2 of these dresses for a vacation and cannot stand them before I go on the said vacation. Sadly I cannot return these.
However there were also some imaginary life purchases that still haven't left the closet like the marisa crops and the fit and flare dress that have been in the closet for almost 2 months and I don't see them leaving it because I keep picking this 3 year old dress when I wanna go out and I love my slouchy pants and completely forget the marisas.
This ones I can return and will do.
Last, and kind of painful, because I love the concept, is my kimono. I love the print, it had great number of thumbs up( 100 of them from Angie) I don't see me wearing it because every time I think' this is the day' I realize that either it wont be functional, practical, appropriated, or some other thing.
This will also have to go back
There are still new unworn tops in my closet, 3 dresses , one pair of shorts, 2 cardigans and a jacket(some of them to wear on vacation and filled an actual need) so I have plenty to keep me happy.
I have my eye on

a flowered clutch(flowers have been a theme with me this season)
one more dress (which are a favorite option for me in summer)
and some golden flats(if I get the courage to purge some of my old flats)

After this I think I am ok until Fall collection comes by.

Sorry for the long rant and if you read all this you are amazing(well, even if you haven't).
I will try to show what is new in my closet in following outfit posts.

Sorry to hear about this, but you are doing incredibly well realizing that you will not be wearing certain items and returning them. It takes lots of will for that. Looking forward to the posts with new stuff!

I have 4 unworn pieces in my wardrobe because I just got them, and it's only warming up now - and I need warmer weather to wear them. So don't rule out unworn pieces too fast!

I'm also going to stick up for the kimono and the Marisas - wear them together and pass on the new frocks that were a bad purchase.

Ah, Celia. I am glad you posted this. We all make these mistakes -- or maybe we should simply call them "learning opportunities." Also, in terms of unworn items, some of them may be unworn (as yet) simply because our temperatures have yet to change, no? I know that is true for me. My summer tops are (so far) languishing in the closet because the weather has not cooperated and I have only begun to wear many of my spring items now!

I dunno if I would be so hasty. Sometimes I need time to work an item into my wardrobe, especially at the start of a season or if the item is a new style or silhouette to me.

Celia, don't feel bad about it, we all making mistakes from time to time. However I would listen to your heart and then with your head try to analyze why you bought these items and why you don't wear them. As for the kimono - this is exactly the reason I did not jump on that bandwagon: I have hard time imagining it in my life even though I find the idea attractive.

Angie- I do love the kimono but honestly I have been thinking about the activities and the 'date nights' that I would like to do this summer and maybe(and it was a big maybe) I would wear it once.When I bought the marisas I was thinking about some lake vacation but realize that even if that comes to pass I would wear them as a kind of comfy pant for nighttime and at that time I would prefer something longer because my legs get cold easily.

Suz- I know what you mean but then again for warm weather I would prefer dresses not crop pants. And never got over the fitting issues of this one.

Janet-I agree, but realistically if I would wear the kimono I would have done it by now.

Sveta- I keep trying to imagine what kind of activities I could create for the kimono but have come empty handed.

Returning your imaginary life is painful! I've done it too, but mine were gorgeous shoes. I can say, though, it is a step that it is a liberating and can be wardrobe changing. When I returned my shoes, I realized that I could absolutely adore something and even be able to see its place in my closet, but that didn't make it something that deserved a place in my closet. Kind of like how I can adore someone's style here on the blog and see how they are putting things together and copycat an outfit, but that doesn't mean that I should. Or I can love a style, but still let it go as not right for me. I adore kimono tops. They are breathtaking. However, I ogled them a bit online and then smartly made the decision that they don't fit into my busy, little-kidded life right now and integrating them into my wardrobe would take more work than I was willing to do and at the end of the day, it probably wouldn't feel like me. So, I'm with you and I love what you are saying!

Great insights, Celia, and thanks for sharing them. We all make those purchases from time to time, but it is very wise to act upon it before it's too late. I'm not good at that!
