I have had some wonderful customer service experiences lately that I posted about. My experience tonight was insulting. I may be over reacting though so tell me if I am.

My day was very hectic and some unexpected things to do this evening. The new Michael Kors store opened today so I ran in there. I saw this beautiful black bag. I picked it up an a sales girl tells me that it is collection bag. She then tells me the price. I admired it for a couple of more minutes and continued looking around. She walks up to me with another bag and says you might like this one better. Then gave me the price. It was $700 less than the original bag. I never asked for a price on either bag. As I type this out I feel silly for being insulted but I was.

Debbie, sorry you had a tough day and felt insulted. I think tone might have a lot to do with it, so maybe that was part of it. It does seem strange that she felt compelled to give you the price on both bags when you didn't ask. My guess is that she is a bit inexperienced (it's a brand new store, after all, so even if she's an experienced salesperson, this store and its prices are probably new to her).

If the second purse was $700 less than the first, it sounds like the first was very expensive--at least in the $1000 range? That's a lot of money, no matter where you go, so she probably thought she was giving good customer service by offering something at a lower price. It could be that this store's prices are more than *she* is comfortable, and she's projecting that by assuming others might be concerned about the prices.

Steph you are right. Tone had a lot to do with it. Following me to another department had something to do with it too.
The first bag was $1000. Which is a very expensive bag. Maybe your right and she was just giving options.
I think maybe I'm just being ridiculous.

I'm so sorry Debbie! Sounds like the SA was projecting her own sticker shock. I would try not to take it personally but I agree that she did not act in a tactful or very smart way.

I'm sorry you were insulted. I'm not saying that sales woman wasn't condescending, because you probably got that from her tone.

I get intimidated going into high-end stores, but I try to remember that most likely the sales staff is in my income bracket and likely understand my sticker shock.
