Resort report...maxis, stripes, and flat sandals.

Back from a week in the DR. The resort our party stayed at was populated by vacationing North Americans and Europeans. The following are just my fashion observations.

- regardless of age, 2 piece suits ( bikinis) were de rigeur on the beach. There were very few tankinis, and even less one piece suits.
- white skinnies with colourful loose tops or T's or dark coloured harem pants with tank tops were the daytime look. Did not see a lot of shorts though it was hot!
- PM dressing was either a maxi dress ( multicoloured stripes very big)' or a high/low ( dare I say 'mullet' dress) with flat sandals. The exception was a smattering of 20 something's in body con too short dresses and platform sandals.
- jewelry was colourful and 'tribal' with colourful wood shapes, beads, and sometimes metal, on cords.

At the airports skinnies- jeans, white, black, stripped t-s, button downs ( sleeved and sleeveless) in bright colours, ballerinas, booties, short flat boots, leather moto jackets.

What I didn't see a lot of: gladiator sandals, pastel colours, coloured pants/ jeans.

Just resort wear? Or hints of summer? I'm thinking of getting a maxi dress to slip on after work for summer evenings...

Any thoughts?

So interesting, carla. I do love a maxi, but they don't love me. About a foot too short.

sad about the glads. Just got a studded pair, worn approximately once! Good thing i don't have much truck with "fashion."

Interesting, indeed. I always love travel reports. There's so much variation between regions. And it's amazing to see how there can be some kind of cohesion even in a resort where people are coming (presumably) from a variety of places.

bj, don't worry about your glads, I am going to wear mine anyway. We just have to make sure we don't go vacationing to DR.

Like Suz I find it so interesting that vacationers from all over converge on a similar style. Have no idea if resort style is a foreshadow of summer style but I loved reading your report!

bj, I'll second what Sveta said. This is just a snapshot of a very small population on a very specific kind of vacation and my general impressions. I suspect what these same folks wear at home is different than their vacation wear.

What surprised me the most was how popular the maxi dress was, and how prevalent stripes were. I expected to see more florals, or the kaleidoscope designs that have been on the runway and in fashion publications for the past year-- but it was all about stripes and bright colours. Also, the fact that there were so few one piece or tankini suits. I was feeling a bit self conscious about my bikinis, but 5 of the 6 women in our group (all in our 50's) only wore bikini's as did the majority of the women-- regardless of age or physical appearance.

Interesting Carla. I wonder if some of them had other clothes that they brought and didn't wear because it didn't fit into the setting.

I live in a tourist town, and maxis are very big here.

I actually like the idea of a maxi dress, and I tried one on--geez, almost two years ago, I think--that I really liked on me. It was a narrow horizontal stripe, and I liked how it looked with a particular cardigan layered over it. I was not comfortable enough with the close fit of the dress to buy it (didn't think I'd wear it that much), but I did like the way it looked on me in the store. I think that particular version of the maxi--a narrow, fairly body-conscious style (kind of like a full-body pencil skirt)-- is more "me" than the loose and flowy ones, which feel too boho for my style.

What kind of maxi are you envisioning, and how would you style it? Those are things to think about. If you could pop on the dress of an evening and mentally return toyour vacation state of mind, it might be a great investment!
