Rejecting returns - YouLookFab Forum

I recently went to Sephora in NYC to return a few items that I had bought in Canada. I did not have the receipts, and they were unable to find the items on my credit card because it was a Canadian card. In the end, they rejected the items on the basis of what their third-party office had on file about my previously returned items. This is confusing to me because this is only the second time that I have returned items to Sephora without a receipt, or to any store for that matter. It really put me off from ordering from them again because I have spent a lot of money there, and my returns constituted a small fraction of my total spending.

This had me thinking about Nordstrom's return policy, which is 'return at any time.' At what point do they reject returns without tags? If I wear a pair of shoes or a garment, and want to return it because of fit issues (e.g. blisters, garment stretching out too much), should I? Or will this ultimately lead to their rejecting my returns in the future?

I think it is more an issue of the different countries and their systems not "talking" to each other. I bet if you returned it in Canada (or had bought it in USA for return in USA) you wouldn't have had a problem. This is coming from a person that lives in Mexico, is from USA and works with computer systems. So I have seen similar stuff and understand the behind the scenes with systems - long story short, I wouldn't take it personally, and would continue to adhere to the store's policy...but try to return in the country of purchase.

Even in the US, some stores have a limit on the number of returns in a 3 month period- I think it is Express or Limited.

I've shopped at both Anthropologie and Nordstrom for years, with liberal utilization of their return policy. Most are NWT but I've definitely made several months-old returns of worn items (with receipts); no one has ever hassled me about it. I don't take advantage of the policy and never wear items that I know I'll be returning later; but I do use it to save money on "buyer's remorse" when I'll wear something a few times before realizing that it doesn't quite fit correctly. I assume the cost of accepting returns is included in the price markup, and the return policy is definitely a big part of my loyalty to these stores.

While I certainly appreciate the ability to make returns, I have mixed feelings about the "anything goes" policies because I think we end up paying for them with higher prices. I personally believe it's wrong to buy something at NAS (for instance) and then wait until November to return it, after they've lost several months of selling time (and other customers have lost the opportunity to purchase it.) I am all for stores standing behind their items for quality issues but I think 30 days is ample time to make up your mind about wanting to keep something or not.

With your experience at Sephora, I would agree with abc that it could be due to the purchase being made in Canada.

I agree with others that the issue is related to purchasing in a different country than returning in.

Neither Zara or Old Navy in the US will accept returns on items purchased in Canada. Believe me, I have tried.
