I have a very similar sweater, purchased last season in black (like the burgundy below). The knit is lovely: Substantial, smooth and refined. When I saw this one in deepest purple, one of my favorite colors, I had to give it a whirl. The black I purchased in a Large, but I chose to size up to an XL to have greater drape and ease of layering (underneath).

I love the color and the quality, and it fits with other items in my closet, but I know the silhouette is quite classic. Is this piece bold enough to seem like a reasonably modern version of a cardi?

I'm not sure why this wouldn't seem modern. Banana Republic and Vince also make sweaters with this style. There is drama to this style, so it's a statement if that's what you're needing.

The one on the right is the classic version. I have an earlier version of this one that I got over 4 years ago. I still use it as loungewear. So I concur with the quality of this line of knitwear. Mine was washable as well.

Thanks for the input. Deepest purple is probably one of the most flattering colors for me. It's rather dramatic in it's own right, so perhaps it's good that the lines are simple. Aubergine: you'd definitely want a petite, unless your arms are really long! The sleeve length is generous.

I like it, but seems a liitle bit big to my eyes, esp on the arms and shoulders. Did you tried the size down? I think the collar has an enough of a dramatic shape, drape and cut for having succes with sizing it down, too. I didn't want to be a spamer, so this is only my 2 cents. Otherwise color is spectacular indeed and wow, love that pleated leather skirt underneath!!:-)

Yes, that is the current update of the waterfall cardigan. I asked a few weeks ago and have been checking around since...the old ones dropped all the way and came to a point in the front. All the new ones seem to have the thicker drape pieces/bigger collar near chest level, and fewer layers to drop down.

So, that one seems very current, and a great color! Keep!

Fantastic color. I, too, have trouble identifying what makes any particular basic style "current" but it sounds good if it's being seen in more trendy lines such as Vince and not just in a traditional market. Also I struggle with sizing, but if you compared sizes and had any sense that the smaller size was skimpy or had a just-classic fit, I agree erring on looser style is best and aids in keeping it on the current side of things. I have 2 cardigans I bought in the past 6-12 mos that I already feel should fit more loosely. You also have the option of pushing the sleeves up a bit (at the risk of losing cozy factor, though!) if you needed to return some structure to the look.

Lyn mentioned feeling it seemed a bit loose. Anyone else feel this way? I chose this size for more draping in back (the large was fine, it fit without "stretching" in the back), but the sleeves, while long, were a bit too snug to layer under easily. They felt fine in the large, because of the stretch, but looked a bit "sausage" like.
