This week's post on budgeting prompted me to look through my purchases this year, and I realized that despite feeling pleased with the majority of my purchases, I've made a lot of mistakes! About 1/6 of my purchases haven't worked out. They're all gone, because as soon as I realize something's not right, I consign it or pass it on, but I'm glad that I track so I can learn from the mistakes.

Key findings:

  • Avoid gray - it's not my happy color. Although it seems "practical," a gray wrap dress and a gray sweater were passed on shortly after purchase. In contrast, all the navy and black items purchased this year are in heavy rotation.
  • Don't try too hard to make a concept work. I had an idea that a navy-and-black jacket would be a perfect topper for my black work dresses. Finally found one after scouring online, but the only available size was a bit boxy on me and the piece was not as well-made as I would have liked. In my enthusiasm, I proceeded with tailoring the sleeves, only to wear it twice and realize I'd rather wear my perfectly fitting navy Hugo Boss blazer (one of the winners this year) with my black dresses. It seems whenever I try too hard to make an idea materialize, it's never as successful as happening upon the perfect dress, blazer, or accessory for my wardrobe.
  • Footwear is hard! No real revelations here, since we all know this, but I can be even more cautious going forward. For example, one pair of nude ballet flats, worn often, just didn't hold up, and another pair that struck me as on-trend were passed on after several wears - they just didn't feel like me, so it's probably better to stick to what I love (e.g., simple almond-toed heels and classic ballet flats).

Overall, lots of wins so far this year - an abundance of navy dresses that make getting dressed easy for work and weekends, two sharp new blazers, an elegant double-stand pearl bracelet that's been a terrific investment, a black patent bow belt that's perfect for dresses, several great pairs of heels and flats, and a new small burgundy handbag that I know will be a weekend favorite - but it's definitely helpful for me to reflect on what hasn't worked out, and why.

Over to you - any wardrobe mistakes this year, and any lessons learned?
