Red Lipstick - can you wear it with anything?

I'm just re-testing my lovely red lipstick for tomorrow's race day, absolutely love it, and it got me thinking...

Can you wear red lipstick with anything and everything, or should you really only wear it with stuff that it coordinates with? And I do mean a red lipstick, not a lipgloss or stain or anything like that - proper red lippie!

I really do love a great rep lip (ha no surprises there I'm sure LOL)!!

doesn't Angie wear red lipstick very frequently? I'm sure it's not just when she wears red.

I've wondered about this too, Theresa. I'm pretty boring about finding something I love and sticking with it, and one of those things is my red lipstick. When I was in my 20s, I had a couple of pink/rose-colored lipsticks that I enjoyed, but they don't seem to work as well in my late 30s, and I wear lipstick so infrequently that I don't experiment much with it anymore. I try to reassure myself that since it worked for Carolyn Bessette Kennedy to have one signature lip color, it should be fine for me, but I'm no Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and may be deluding myself. I'll be curious to hear what the rest of you have to say...

I wear a muted red lipstick during the day and a FIRE red lipstick at night. With everything. It does not change.

Depends what the red is, I think. As Angie seems to demonstrate, bold red is a bit bizarre during the day (to be fair, I find it bizarre in general though). But a more delicate, muted red is fine.

...then there are boring people like me who will never paint their toenails or wear red lipstick!

I'm not really a fan of lipstick in general for me. It collects in the corners of my mouth, bleeds round my lips and is too hard for me to keep looking polished. I also have braces so I am not that keen on drawing attention to that part of my face...maybe when the braces come off I'll bust out the bold lips but til then, it's Chapstick for me all the way!

I say if you've got a shade of red that suits you, go for it. I like Angies idea of a daytime red and a nighttime red too, just to mix it up a bit. But I don't think there's ever a situation where red lipstick is inappropriate.

Oooooo I just bought my first red lipstick today and I LOVE it! I'm going to be daring and wear it lots and lots and lots. Particularly in the cooler weather I think. Maybe when it is really hot I will wear a more neautral colour, particularly during the day time. Have fun at the races tomorrow!

Love red but when I used it I like to wear it neutrals colors. Lovely to use with black, white, navy, brown or cream ensambles!

Another thing I do is when wearing red, keep the eye make up very simple!!

Unfortunately I haven't found the right shade of red lipstick for myself yet I might have to visit MAC again one of these days. Any suggestions?

Love red lipstick but I have thin lips and they look even thinner with bright/ dark lipsticks but I'd love to wear it with everything x

Vani, how bold do you want to go? I tried on probably hundreds of berry and red colors at the MAC counter, since YLF seems to universally love those shades, but I hated every single one. I felt like a clown. I just don't like my makeup to draw attention to itself I guess.

I finally found my match in a pretty sheer terra cotta color. It looks a bit scary in the tube but it is the luster finish and therefore goes on light. I don't like opaque lipsticks. I find them aging and rather dry in texture. This one was perfect. It is called Charismatic if that helps. I'm not sure what your skin tone/shade is like (I'm hopeless at determining stuff like that), but on my warm, medium-y skin it works well.
