Recommend socks that don't fall down!

It's time to refresh some of my sock drawer. I am fully stocked on crew and shorter lengths that get worn with skinny jeans. But now that I'm wearing bootcuts/flares more now, I am wanting longer, knee-high socks again. I have a couple of pairs that are great -- they don't fall down and aren't too bulky, but I can't even remember who made them or where I got them, and they're starting to get worn out.

So, any recommendations for great knee-high or trouser socks that don't slide down your legs? Bonus for fun patterns or colors.

The elastic on top gives out quickly so they need to be replaced often. You might ask an SA in the Nordstrom hosiery department for help with this.

My Sister-in-law swears by those Bombas socks that are advertised everywhere. She says they don't fall down, and that once she got some she bought more and threw out all her old socks. Sounds like that was pricey. For what it's worth... she did have me try on a pair and they do feel nice but I can't swear to whether they stay in place since I didn't wear them for more than a minute.

Oh, I did find one pair that was kind of tucked back in the drawer that are really good. They're compression socks but not crazy tight compression socks -- fine for everyday wear. They're by Dr. Motion. I may have to try ordering some more from them.

Watching for suggestions!
I have brand new trouser socks including some Spanx and ALL are sliding down! Always has been an occasional problem but seems more so. My good, slightly thicker Gold Toe in wool or cotton - years old- are still working but I need a couple pairs of thinner one for boots that fit more snugly.

I have no idea but I'm following with interest. I hate that feeling when my socks slide around and end up bunched up in my boots.

I got some smartwool trouser socks a couple of years ago, and they are great. They aren't super thin, but they certainly aren't hiking socks... perfect weight for "normal" socks imho. They're not knee high though, more like half way. The colours can be a but crazy, but keep your eyes open, some are wearable

I was growling about my sliding socks just the other day, so I'll be checking out suggestions! So annoying to have to keep pulling your socks up, ugh.

i recommend these from Nordies. they fit me really well because they are sized, and the light compression and spandex helps keep them up.

kkards, I think those are my old ones! I'm pretty sure I've had them for years and couldn't remember if they were from Nordstrom or not. They are good.

No suggestions, but I am following! Nothing worse than unintentionally puddled socks and cold shins. Compression is a bonus, too!

I have quite the capsule of smartwool socks. Love them.
I dont machine dry my socks, so that the dryer doesn't destroy the stretch fibers in them.

See, I had trouble with Smartwool socks a couple of years ago -- except for with my hiking boots. So I keep those for hiking and the like.

The ones that kkards posted look promising. And they come in navy and black which is exactly what I need. I'm very matchy, matchy with socks.

I don’t understand Smartwool socks . They slide down and bunch up and are highly annoying . I got a pair in my Christmas stocking last Year and felt guilty about getting rid of them so quickly . I swear I spent half the day at work today pulling up ONE sock . Over and over again . Stupid things .

I feel like there are lots of good options for ankle and crew socks, but finding knee socks that don't fall down is almost impossible. I won't wear Smartwool socks because they wear out too fast. I love Darn Tough for boot socks and running socks and even their "invisible" low-cut socks are the best I've found for that style. But their casual knee-highs do not work for me at all; not enough stretch in the calf so they always slide down.

The best luck I've had is with the British brands Viyella and Pantherella. I suspect that the combination of vertical ribbing and an elastic welt at the top makes them more accommodating for different size/shape calves. They're also beautifully made and last a long time,

I'm curious to try Bombas next. I have some of their merino quarter-height socks and I really like them in warmer weather, and the knee socks have that vertical rib, so maybe they'll work. I think they might be a little thicker and warmer, which is what I need for winter.

I like my pattered Sox Trot ones, but they're veeeery thin, so limited use. For normal winter I just go with Hanes, cause they're soft!

I love the Bombas ones I have, including one pair of knee high socks. If you want light compression, the Duluth Trading ones are also great.

I’m seriously wondering what is up with this problem, because I’m having it with so many socks now, and not old ones either. Are my feet losing volume, making my shoes looser in the heel and more prone to slip around, working the socks down? The problem is more pronounced on one foot than the other, across several different pairs of shoes and boots. It’s kind of driving me nuts.

Reporting back - I ordered some Bombas because I saw they made hiking socks, which I need soon, and I needed mid-height socks. I also saw they offer a bit of cushioning, arch support, etc.

My socks usually slip down immediately, but so far so good today. They are also super comfortable, and I say that as someone who kind of hates wearing socks. Maybe my SIL will get me some more for Christmas....

Janet, these are fall-proof even on skinny legs, and may be what your old ones are. I got these light compression socks from Nordstrom’s a couple of NAS ago and they are still going strong, but they get air dried.

Reporting back. I ordered these socks from Amazon and they stay up GREAT. Light compression.

Now I want to find some shorter (mid-calf) crew socks that stay up. I only notice this problem with certain boots and shoes, and I think the issue is with slightly roomier footwear. With a looser fit, my heels slip up and down slightly and make the socks shift unless the socks are very snug, or thick. I suspect this is a common problem for those of us with feet slightly lower-volume or more narrow than the average, especially around the heel. If I double up socks, it helps, but I don’t always want that much warmth. And I don’t want to wear knee-highs under skinnier jeans because they stick to the jeans and make the jeans ride up my calves.

Ergh, I hate when socks fall down in boots ... I don't have any great recommendations but I wonder if there are some that have the little silicon grips in the heels? I've only found those on ankle socks but they definitely help ... or maybe the grips can be bought separately and stuck in the sock?

Not being much help but maybe someone knows ... I feel like this must be a thing?!

Smartwool - the tube style fashiony ones are terrible and slide down. The lightweight hikers are great. But Darn Tough is the best.

This is a great discussion, Janet -- thanks for raising the subject. I'm in the same situation -- I need knee highs now with the wider jeans, or else my legs will freeze. And many are either too snug or they fall down.

Varied opinions on Smartwool and the others are so interesting!! We are each so unique. I tried Darn Tough and found them scratchy and kind of nasty and also not breathable (but it's true, they are darn tough!). I have some Smartwool styles that I love, and some that are too big/ bunchy and/ or extremely uncomfortable/ falling down (the Cable style is the worst offender for falling down, whereas the true hiking socks stay put and fit, and the Margaritas and other trouser crew socks more or less stay put most of the time. I have a pair of Icebreaker knee highs that seem to work well, but they are a weird colour.

I'm off to consider some of the other options people have posted. Thank you!

I used to wear elastic garters with my school socks until they started cutting off my blood flow !

The Dr. Motion socks look like a winner! How do they fit in the foot? I wear a size 10 1/2 shoe and wonder if I need to get the men’s version? Any opinions?

I’ve not had good luck with Bombas - they developed holes in the foot quickly.
