Recap: Personal Style/Scale 1-10 Post

Just wanted to recap some of the themes I observed from my post Understanding Style (Scale 1-10).

There are degrees of the following - and for some this might be a continuum:

Understanding Right Silhouette

Consistency of Right Silhouette

Understanding of Style Preferences

Articulation of Personal Style (For some calling it personal style vs. preference is intimidating)

Consistency of Personal Style

Practical Execution: Love + Function of Closet (the translation of theory into practice)

Ideal Execution: Availability and Budget Restrictions

Evolution: Experiencing recent change or desire for refinement

Developing a Strong Understanding of Personal Style:
Takes time.

It's fun. (for some)

Outside perspective is valuable.

Can be more confident about investments.

Style Monikers have been fun for some folks. Perhaps we need secondary Monikers for where you are on your style journey: Strong Executer, Preference Master, Struggling Theorist, Style Sculpture, Student of Evolving Style, Queen without a Castle.

Just taking a crack (needed a creative outlet today) at these monikers. Perhaps these already exist and this is old ground. From what I understand, Angie and others have a real talent for this!

Seems a good list. Those are the issues (!)

It occurs to me there is evolution within a personal style and evolution to another personal style. Although, I'm not sure if the latter is truly possible. We tend to be who we are from the very beginning to the bitter end

Well, I was thinking that my own style persona, as Quirky Waif, has been through some changes but it's still me. That is, there are different ways to be Quirky Waif.

But it's conceivable that I could leave Quirky Waif behind to a large extent - like, haha, when I'm 70. But I have a sort of traditionalist nature. I admire my mom and David Bowie (mom would never guess to find herself in the same sentence with David Bowie) for growing old gracefully by going conservative at a certain point. I mean, David Bowie is still glam, but he put away the face paint and wears suits now.

Got it. This is a very nice insight. I wish I could say it was age that has evolved my style but I'm only 43 -- instead of schizophrenia (when it comes to style) laziness, boredom, etc. I'm hoping to get some wisdom with YLF.

I can tell you have a fine mind. I love the phrase, Queen without a Castle!

I'm no good with monikers, so will ask you.

How do you describe this stage of style evolution:

Finally accepted my life is not exciting enough to merit a glam wardrobe? Begrudged accepter of reality?

CocoLion: Reality Romancer -- You have accepted your reality but you are romancing with trend, special moments, and a playfulness for change and variety. Okay, I'm just making things up but I really like your style. I remember looking back at your picks when I first came onto YLF.

And we really need the writers to work on this...and those who are much better with words.

I like this, as it shows style progression, not perfection, where you sort of solidify around a visual identity and start spackling. Thinking Joan Collins here
Forgiving of how roles and bodies change. Rachy Lou mentions growing up into a style, revisiting it and refining it. Love that. Variations on a general theme.
Another forum member posted The Row show photos and that would work well for the official part of my life, I have a very similar long wool coat with no buttons, love all flats and oversized slouch. Simple hair.
But it would be impossible to work with in my everyday life, which will destroy anything precious or dry cleanable only. That goes straight to safari or sport chic, recalling Hepburn, as the person who probably personifies simple and well fitted classics, with a utilitarian outlook. Give me pockets or give me death!
Must lay off the coffee now....
