Really, really expensive plastic

I used to buy a lot of vintage jewelry, Anna, including some Bakelite Deco pieces, and even today you can still find some beautiful jewelry made from this early plastic at prices that are well below the prices of these contemporary pieces at Barney's. fact, I bought a pair of Bakelite earrings at a tiny shop in Salzburg just a few weeks ago when we were there on vacation.

Vintage Bakelite is in great demand by collectors thus driving up the prices. But there are still a few smaller vintage stores here and there that don't know what it's worth. I picked up my pink Bakelite bangle at Value Village for $1.99!

BTW if you want to know if a piece of Bakelite is real or fake, you run the piece under hot water for a few minutes and if you get a faint formaldehyde smell, you've got the real thing.

My goodness,! I worked at Value village in high school circa 1980. we used to sell plastic jewelry like that for pennies!

My dad is probably rolling in his grave! He used to teach making jewelry and other things from bakelite at a YMCA in the 40's. My sister and I played dress up with stuff like this. I wish I had some of it now!
