Reality vs. Fantasy - no. 2

Today's fantasy outfit would have become reality - if only the weather would have cooperated. But reality was rainy and cold, so I needed to bundle up. Wearing my shoes and not my boots was my nod towards spring.

Both versions are lovely Astrid. I like the different tones of blue in both jackets and the scarves are gorgeous. I love how bundled and cosy you look in #2. Shame the weather won't behave. It's cold where we are too.

One thing that strikes me is that your two fantasy outfits so far have a more matched set look about them. Your reality outfits lean toward a more mixed separates look. It's subtle, but it's there. Your fantasy outfits are richer.

You are *real German,* so I don't know if you'd relate... But there is a German American thing about being too fancy. *We* like everything to be an unidentifiable brown.

Rachylou, that's interesting - seems as if I go for the "matched set look" if I have the option, but real life needs force me to mix and match and deviate from that. Not sure what you mean with the German American thing, can you explain a bit?

My best is #2 because - again - that light tinted scarf next to your face makes you look healthy, fresh, energized, and alive. I LOVE that.

I forgot to say that the Fantasy look is fab too, Astrid. (I'm often so rushed to comment). A very subtle difference between the two looks, but the scarf is amazing, and does the same flattering job. You are living your Style Fantasy life it seems. Lucky you.

Thanks Angie - that's the drawback of the plaid scarf, it's too bulky to be worn comfortably indoors, if I don't use it as a stole. The second scarf is thinner and I can keep it on as part of the outfit.

To stereotype a bit, there's a bit of German American cultural attitude against looking too rich, too fancy, too colourful, standing out, getting a big head, etc.

For example, my ex-bf had to have everything in a non-descript tan brown. He even managed to find a CAN OPENER with tan handles. Or for example, my aunties would call you fat if you were cute and skinny or scrawny if you were well-fed.

In any case, I find your fantasy outfits suggest a kind of wealth. I was wondering why they might be in your fantasy category...

Rachylou, thanks for the explanation! I love clothes that feel good and are well made, luxe fabrics and great construction. Which does cost money. When my parents made investments in clothes or furniture or whatever they went for quality first and yes, nothing that would stand out. I don't have that much money right now, but with a bigger budget I do see myself spending more on single neutral/timeless pieces and wearing those to death. I guess it's instilled in me to spend my money in a sensible way. Sensible also meaning not too out there. Which didn't really answer your question, right?

Angie, I plan to look out for a lighter weight wool scarf next fall.

It's interesting. Because as I wrote my explanation, I wanted to say 'quiet wealth'. I didn't because I thought that sounded contradictory. But as you described your instilled values, it occurred to me there's a logical fit with that terminology - even if it isn't the actual reason. I mean, you are a 'poor, starving student' right now. The 'reality' is, you're supposed to look the part - even tho obviously you can do quiet quality right now.

Right. Can anyone follow that train of thought? Or did I garble it?

I've loved reading the dialogue between you and RachyLou! My shadow style is the kind of 'strict' look described by Duchesse des Perles that involves very subtle colours and cuts and details and requires a comparatively extravagant clothing allowance and good tailor on speed dial. As that doesn't describe my life in the slightest, it shall remain a shadow style for now.

But to talk about you! I love big of these looks and hope that spring arrives for you soon so you can enjoy the second one. It seems to have arrived here quite suddenly yesterday!

Thanks Eva! It's been warmer today, but weather forecast says the rain will be back tomorrow... I hear you on that shadow style having to remain hidden! Not sure what I would do if I had no restrictions put down, it would definitely be interesting.
