This morning I received an email from a friend in Cornwall telling me that the EU has granted the Cornish people protected minority status, which puts them with Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

In 2008 DH and I spent a week in Redruth, Cornwall, my ancestral home on the side of my Mom's paternal grandfather. My Cornish ancestors were miners, steam engineers and inventors. Next summer I'm going to give a presentation on them at the Cornish Cousins Gathering in Milwaukee.

Here I am as a Cornish lass working with the tinners, then standing on the main street of Redruth next to the statue of a tin miner. I also have a shot of the Cornish flag of St. Piran, the patron saint of Tinners.

In 2012 I attended a conference in Dartmouth, Devon, to mark the 300th anniversary of the invention of the steam engine by Thomas Newcomen. Here I am with the Lord Mayor of Dartmouth, with my 5th cousin, who was one of the speakers, in the left background.
