Rant - missing clothes

I can't find a brown pleated skirt and it's driving me crazy! My husband doesn't understand why I'm so worked up about it. It's not where it's supposed to be and my closet is fairly well organized without a lot of clutter so I have no idea what could have happened to it. It's been missing for a couple laundry cycles now. I just can't figure out what could have happened to it. Now that I can't find it, I keep coming up with outfits with it, which makes it even more annoying that I can't find it anywhere. Sorry for the rant, but I feel like people here will understand why I'm so upset about one missing skirt.

Sending you big hugs! I have had that happen before and it is no fun. Hopefully it just got hung up in the wrong spot or kicked under the bed or something.

I hear you. Sometimes I find clothes hide in the weirdest places.

The sunglasses I found in my sock drawer
The black knit skirt that was mistaken for and folded up with black knit pants
Earrings tucked into the pocket of my gym bag and forgotten about
Pajamas found in my sleeping bag that I apparently wore on the previous years camping trip
Various items left behind while visiting my parents

It drives me nuts!

Oh yeah, especially when you know you didn't get rid of it and it should be somewhere. Hate it when that happens.

Behind the dresser? Fallen down behind something in the closet? Mixed in with your husband's clean clothes after laundry? Accidentally left in a suitcase after a trip? Dry cleaners? Trunk of the car because it needed alterations or you changed clothes at the gym? Waiting to be ironed somewhere?

It reminds me of the times I have suddenly thought about wearing a certain item that I actually hardly wore for years then finally thrifted. You really want it back NOW, THIS MINUTE and can't help kicking yourself for losing it/letting it go!
You WILL find it eventually though, so try not to sweat-it too much!

I *hate* when that happens! I am missing a bracelet right now, and it's driving me nuts. I can't figure out where it might be hiding. It's a fairly bulky cuff bracelet, too, which you'd think would be fairly hard to lose.

Ditto to Laura's suggestions.

Funny aside: there was one time I couldn't find my favorite (at the time) pair of jeans, and I realized my stepson was wearing them! He's 6'5" tall and skinny, so it's actually kind of amazing that my jeans even fit him well enough that he couldn't tell he was wearing women's jeans.

I hate it when this happens too. And there have been a few items I have never found!

I feel your pain! I'm missing a white gold hoop earring; fell out of my ear, and I can't find it.

If it makes you feel any better, when we lived in Central America, one of my babysitters stole most of my oldest DD's clothes. Back then, clothing imported from the U.S. was very expensive, so we only bought clothing once a year when we went home to the States for Christmas. Needless to say, replacing the missing items had to wait until our next trip home. I was upset, as you can imagine, especially since our family had given clothing and other items to that girl in appreciation for the work she did for us.

Maybe it's off partying with all the missing socks? I don't understand how I can put a pair of socks into the dryer and only one comes back out. Where do they go?

Anyway - love Laura's suggestions and hope one of those turns out to be the case.

I totally feel your pain. I can't find a sleeveless cobalt knit top I bought as part of my summer work wardrobe and am very sad about it. I'm going to work through Laura's list when I get home, though!

Fallen between the dryer and the washer? Tucked in an outside or inside pocket of a suitcase? Doubled up on a pant hanger with something else? Accidentally put away with out-of-season clothes or in another family member's closet? (How can you tell this has happened to me too?)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm going to work through these when I get home tonight. Some of them I've already thought of and searched - such as in the out-of-season boxes, the back of the closet, and in my husband's clothes. I haven't checked my gym bag or suitcases or behind some of the bedroom furniture. I'm in the process of going through all the shelves in my closet (although why it would be on a shelf and not hanging, I haven't a clue). The one good thing is that since I'm going through shelves and drawers so carefully, I'm purging lots of clothes I don't wear anymore.

I'm sorry. I thought I lost a gray cropped cardigan and it took me a year to find it! It was hidden in a suitcase that I thought was unpacked and the only reason I found it was that I had to pack to move. Good luck with your skirt!

The last thing that went missing at our house was a pair of windpants. I absolutely knew the last time they'd been worn (into a store after an out-of-town race), and thought I might have left them at my daughter's house after changing there. Searched her house and mine, and my car, and my gym bag, etc. for 6 months. I finally found them down behind a dresser drawer. Too many clothes in that drawer had pushed them to the back, up and over.

Found a pocket watch DH had missed for a couple of years in the pocket of a duffle bag. I was getting rid of the bag, so I went through all the pockets, thank goodness!

I usually find those "missing" items in the closet neatly between two other items (I swear I looked 10 times!) or sometimes on the same hangar and hidden by another item such as when I am trying to make outfits and leave a skirt or pants and jacket together.

I was going to post what Texstyle just did. Usually my missing things have either fallen down behind something in the closet or are hanging under something else.

I've lost a couple of items, even with my tiny wardrobe. One I discovered YEARS later in a suitcase!!!

I have lost a few things and they eventually show up, usually tucked under someone else's clean clothes in the big laundry sort

Do you have any brown sheets, towels or blankets? It could have gotten folded and put away with them. I have found some of my clothes in my son's room, of all places. He knew my shorts weren't his, so he just threw them in a bottom drawer or in his closet (gee, thanks, son)! I hope you find it! That can be maddening. And after a while, it's not even about the item so much as the fact you can't find it!

Claire - you are so right - it's not just that I'm missing a skirt, I have plenty of other ones to wear, it's the frustration of not being able to find it.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. Still no luck, but I haven't been through my suitcases yet. They're in one of the kids' bedrooms and he's asleep so I'll have to wait on that.

The good news is that I have three large bags of clothes for Goodwill now. As I search, I've been purging unworn and imperfect items.
