Rain boots: In lieu of shoes or worn over shoes?

I've always wanted some and found some on sale that I like. But I've heard differing things about rain boots. Some say they should fit large so that you can wear them over your regular shoes. I was planning on wearing them with socks as my primary foot covering when running errands on a rainy day.

What do you think?

A great idea *if* they are comfortable. I can't walk in mine for long because the rubber digs into my shins when I walk, so that rules out long errands and walks. But an hour or two is fine. Hunter boots get my vote.

Wellies often don't come in half sizes and I suggest sizing up and wearing a thick sock.

I take a 6 1/2 usually and bought my Hunter's in a 7 they are perfect with a thick pair of socks. I wore them volunteer dog walking last year for 4 hours and they were comfy if sweaty though that's to be expected with wellies in the summer x

I've heard that about wearing boots over, too, but I think it only works with certain shoes in certain situations. I just wear my rain boots with nice thick socks.

I think if you want something to wear over shoes, you want galoshes like these:

Otherwise, I admire Hunter boots (although they don't fit my "athletic" calves).
