Thanks for the article. Nordstrom's really does have a winning formula. Nothing quite like them. I am not at all surprised that they are doing so well and that they are expanding outside of the USA. I generally hate mall shopping -- but popping into Nordstrom's is always a delight. My hubby even enjoys hanging out having a cup of coffee from their cafe and listening to the piano player while waiting for me to finish browsing.

Interesting article, especially the part about Nordstrom's early history. And I really liked how they contrasted the comfortable, inclusive Nordstrom atmosphere with that of Barneys and Bergdorf.

They got rid of the piano player at my Nordstroms. I was kinda sad about it.

But they gave me a return kiosk!!!!!!! I decided it was a fair exchange.

The other day I called Nordstrom to cancel a couple of things that were backordered. The customer service rep couldn't have been nicer. By contrast, the grandpa sweater I returned (after many of you suggested it wasn't my best look), not only did LLBean charge me return shipping, but they didn't credit my credit card either - they sent a merchandise credit card.

Now that I think of it, Sterling... haven't seen the piano players in the store nearest me for a couple of years. (Have lately been ordering online more often than not.) But they still have a comfortable area where hubby can sit and read a book or people watch. And whatever music they are piping in has the same relaxing effect. Once in a while, they have a solo acoustic musician out by the cafe... but that could be a mall hiree. Anyway -- the ambiance is always pleasant and unhurried. They are doing something right because we keep coming back. And yes... customer service is the best and the employees are helpful but not overbearing.
