Rachel Roy pants - shopping dilemma

This is why you should never check a website for a co-worker - you might see something for yourself!

About a month ago, I tried on these Rachel Roy army green pants http://www.thebay.com/webapp/w.....6547-103-- and fell in love with them. The fabric is oh so soft and drapey and the color is a true army green (although here it shows more yellowy than it is IRL). At the time I didn't buy them for a variety of reasons but it was not because I didn't love them.

They have now gone on significant discount (and still have my size large) and I'm seriously thinking of going at lunch time and buying them. I did post in the Off Topics section recently about not buying just "want" items but focusing on "need" items, which would include a few tops and bottoms for fall (I'm not buying anything for summer now). These trousers would fall (pardon the pun - lol!) into my purchasing category. I think they would also look kick a** with my olive Fluevogs, black leather blazer, white leather blazer, etc. etc.

So what you my fellow Fabbers think? Buy or not buy?

If they fall into your "need" category and aren't just a "want", then I think you should get them. Another question to ask is since you are severely limiting your shopping, are these versatile enough?

Excellent question Sara - I think I could start wearing these as soon as the days start to cool off (mid August ?) and right into November, depending on our weather. And then bring them out again in the spring. And since I'm at work more than not (sadly!), they would be versatile. But it is a good question and one worth considering ...hmmmm...

are you committed to the ongoing dry cleaning cost with them?
Since they're rayon, they'll shrink continually from washing.

When I made the decision to limit my shopping a few years back, I forced myself to play devil's advocate as to why something wasn't right for my closet before plunking down my dollars. I could always find a way to justify why I ought to buy something that caught my fancy, but looking at the downside was useful exercise. Is this exactly the right color? Will the style still excite me six months from now? Is the fabric and construction good enough? If a garment could make it through this kind of filter, only then did I consider adding it to my wardrobe. Thinking this way helped me walk away any number of times--and, in retrospect, gave me more happiness with what I actually ended up purchasing.

More devils advocate here...
Are they on the required list for the fall? Are they in the colour palette?
Do you have silky pants that are similar?
Would you consider them at full price?

Well ladies, I went and tried them on again at lunch time. I needed to know. I still absolutely love the trousers and did buy them as they were the last pair, but I have not yet committed to keeping them (they can be returned).

Vildy raises an excellent point about the ongoing dry cleaning and I need to give that serious consideration.

Rae - I do still have the taupe slouchy trousers but unfortunately, they are too small at this time. Maybe someday they'll fit again as I have kept them...hoping...

Glory - cross posted! I think I would have considered them at full price but the dry cleaning issue really has my questioning the purchase.

Ah, you are looking so slim these days, I thought they'd fit! If these are your only silky pants, I think they are a need. The colder weather version of your silky shorts!

hmmm they look very good indeed and I like this colour as they were appearing mustard/yellowish in the link. You have some time to consider them. You could handwash in cold rather than dryclean and then steam, couldn't you?

If you could handwash them, then I would keep them. Otherwise I would not. The continual drycleaning cost and hassle of dropping them off would relegate them to orphans in my closet. But maybe that wouldn't be a dealbreaker for you.

If they were on your list to buy, then it's fair to consider them.
If you were lusting after them only because someone else pointed them out to you and then the thought of them kept coming back to you, then they might be more of a "want." I would ask, Are they something you would be looking for anyway, had they not come across your radar via your coworker?

They do look good on you in the dressing room photo. (I love the style from the online photo, too, but I agree the color looks a lot more neutral and versatile in the dressing room shot.)

See??? I never EVER should have gone and tried them on again - I am my own worse enemy - lol!

Rae - the only other silky pants I have are my black Joe Fresh ones, which definitely won't work into the cooler weather.

Glory - they are definitely an army green. They look so different in the stock photo don't they?

Suz - ha ha...you're making me laugh...you're a friend despite your enabling and your teasing (and it is very gently)! And believe me, I definitely know I have a shopping addiction! I almost wish you didn't love them though...

Ceit - yep, it's that darned dry clean only. I knew they had rayon in them but honestly didn't realize they were 100% rayon until Vildy pointed it out (thank you Vildy!). It could be the deal breaker for me not so much related to any ongoing cost or hassle dropping off, but because my local dry cleaning takes about 10 days to get anything back so this cuts down on how many times I'd be able to wear these before it gets super winter cold, you know?

Firecracker - pants in general are on my list although not necessarily slouchy ones. I do love the neutral color.

Anna - thanks for chiming in! I'll be honest, another customer at the store quite plainly (bordering on rudely) told me they were not flattering on me. She said they made my hips look wide and I wouldn't be able to tuck into them. May I ask if that's what you're seeing as well? I did wonder about the extra hip/thigh bulk.

That is what I meant, Shannon -- you have to drop them off and then wait for them to be ready. Each time you wear them they'll be out of commission for a week or more!

They're not bulky. It's just that I don't think they are drapey enough. I want more! They are on the edge between boring and cool, in my eye tippings towards boring. But that is my blunt, honest assessment, I hope I wasn't rude.

Deliberately playing devil's advocate here! If these were the trousers for Fall would they not be hanging in your closet already? Plus there will always be trousers, there will always be another sale, therefore, are the trousers really your number one priority?

I like them but I don't love them. Dry cleaning isn't a deal breaker for me but I admit that I am spoiled because DH takes things a few times a week and they are ready the next day so I have none of the inconvenience or cost to deal with!

My complaint with rayon is that it creases/wrinkles quite a bit so in a slouchy pant I would feel all rumply by the end of the day.

Jules - right on! I do need a pair of pants for fall but it's only July and I can get something closer to the appropriate season when they are needed and more of a priority.

Vildy/Ceit - the dry cleaning only is a deal breaker.

Anna - thanks for the style honesty And my son would be proud of me using the word "poser".

It makes more style and financial sense to buy trousers later in the summer/early fall when I will be needing them and to get something in a more substantial fabric so I can wear them into the cold weather.
