Rachel Comey x Target dress and coat

Hi all - taking a break from post-basement flood stuff to assess some items I got from the Target collabs.

Both of these Rachel Comey items are too long on me, I think. The coat is so fun, and I’m tempted to shorten it to more of a mid-calf look. But I kind of get a fancy bed jacket vibe from it? Am I crazy?

I am similarly on the fence about the dress, though at least I don’t get a hospital gown vibe from it.
! I certainly would shorten it as well.

I also got the same Nili Lotan jeans as kkards, but they were both too tight and even longer on me. I don’t think it’s worth sizing up and then having them hemmed.

So these Target items are for tall people, basically.

I saw this coat and i really liked it! I think its worth shortening. I think the colors are great on you…and its got a fun vibe that i can see you in. I like the dress as well.

Yes, sorry the coat looks very much like what in NZ we call a “dressing gown”.
I like the dress much better on you but agree it’s a bit long.
The curse of the short person! I empathise. I recently returned a black jacket I had tried after a long search because the sleeves were too long and as they had zips at the wrist they were too difficult to alter.

I think they both have potential but only if you want to invest in some tailoring. How is the quality? I am very curious about this collab and wondering if it feels more Target or more Rachel Comey in person.

Ultimately, I think I agree with cat2 that I have better dresses, though I think it’s the more workable of the two items. The fabric has sort of a stiff feel that I don’t enjoy, but it would be a minor complaint if I really loved it otherwise, because it’s not that bad. I still love to shop but I’m trying to be very picky about what I keep these days. I don’t really need anything, but I’m trying to add pieces I love in a sort of curated way, if that makes sense.

If the turtleneck in the same print were still available, I would try it. It’s a cool print!

Shevia, are used to shop a lot of these Target collaborations, and as those things go, these items are pretty nice. I have no direct experience or actual Rachel Comey items though - I’m sure those are nicer. The Nili Lotan jeans seem really nice too. Ah well!

I vote to return the coat. The dress has potential if you are willing to have it hemmed.

Hmm. I just peered carefully at the Target site. The coat looks like one of my MIL’s quilted bedcoat/housedresses on the model, too, but it’s hard to see because she is dressed in a column of black, and it obscures the cut of the garment.

I’m on the fence about the coat, leaning 65% no, 35% yes. I want so badly for this to be a hit for you, because the colors are so groovy! But you look overwhelmed in it, and would need to shorten the sleeves a bit as well as the length. Alterations raise the price beyond the $60 you initially paid. Do you love this coat to the extent of paying another $20 or more?

I really like that dress, and I think it looks prettier on you than on the model. Again, though, there’s an added alteration cost, so I think you should be certain you really love it before you commit. (I feel like this is good relationship advice, too ).

Both items need quite a bit of alteration. If you feel like doing that - keep and we can talk about it. If not, return and next!

Hmm, the coat looks overall too big in addition to being too long? And yeah i am kind of getting a bed jacket/sleeping bag vibe.

I like the dress. I'm kind of on the fence about whether you need to shorten it. I feel like it might work at this length with boots, but not with the shoes you're currently wearing.

(I actually ordered the dress too - it's apparently been delivered and is waiting at home for me! I kind of suspected that it would be very long because I just assume all models are at least 4 inches taller than me.)

I think there will be easier dresses out there for you - this one does look nice but not sure it is worth fussing with.

The coat is fabulous - I am trying to think who it would work on because it is so dramatic.

Some brands are just not for our body shape. I remember having a discussion a few years ago when every dress I tried was too short. I explained that and the retail assistant said I could wear leggings or tights underneath (which is true) but I came to the conclusion I was too tall for all the dresses and moved on. Sometimes sizing up or down just does not work.

Coming back to say that the Rachel comey dress was waiting for me when I got home, I tried it on, and i think it’s too long for me too! I also agree with you about the fabric- it seems quite well made but I found the puff sleeves to be kind of too much in that fabric. I think if it was this length and a drapier fabric OR several inches shorter and made of this stiffer fabric, I’d like it. As it is I don’t think I like it enough to bother shortening.

(As an aside I got the nili Lotan trench as well and it’s also too long!)

Thanks all! I think it's not worth my time, energy and money right now to alter the dress. I don't love it enough. That's a good way to determine how much you love and item you're on the fence about, isn't it?

Love the colors of the coat, and wish it were not giving the bed jacket vibe. Ah well. It does appear large on me, but I often have this problem with coats - they need to fit over my middle and hips but end up looking too large on top.
