I think this is sort of an attention getting dress on it's own (without a jacket). It could be Resort wear or Sundress or maybe any of those you listed depending on the circumstance. I know however that in Florida it is very common to wear this style of dress and I see it often so I'm not saying that you shouldn't wear it, just that it does ask for attention being such a bold color, having a revealing top and a somewhat short hemline on the model at least. Would the BF be comfortable with you out in public if you were wearing it as shown?

Tex, that's what I want to get to the bottom of - if it's seen as bold, is any red dress likely to be taken that way? And if so, why? I had a bright blue that I wore until I found it too short. Is red inherently a 'look at me' color, whereas a similarly bright tone in a different color isn't?

It's hard to separate the dress from the "come hither" look of the model. I think it looks rather sundress-y for a beach town but I wouldn't wear that in suburbia unless I was going to the pool and had a swim suit underneath it. I would wear it on a tropical vacation though. Weird how environment makes a difference to me. Hmm.

The blue dress has more coverage and seems like it would be more versatile. The red dress reads more "sexy" to me.

The blue dress has a lot more upper coverage. I think if you want to go short, you need the balance of more coverage on top. If you go longer, you can get away with less coverage on top maybe. The red definitely is a sexier color I think, but it's the whole package that defines the look. And as kellygirl said, the look of the model is also something to consider.

Edit: I should have added that the form fitting or body con aspect is part of the consideration as well.

Okay, to add to the mix, here is a red dress I had that I purged last year as feeling too sweet or retro or whatever. Never had the BF wondering why I'd wear it out to lunch with him. Then the dress I just gave to consignment that the BF deemed NOT a day dress (lol) in New Orleans.

My intent is a day dress that I can walk to the stores in the heat in, and/or go to a casual lunch. I may (rarely) put a jacket or different belt over it to take it into early evening, but mostly looking for a kick around dress for casual daytime heat with some style.

Coverage and structure also need to be figured into the equation. I don't think a tailored red dress comes across quite the same was as something drapey and strappy. Bodycon red dresses scream sexy and attention getting.

When I had my colors done and took a style class "back in the day", we were told that red in all its incarnations is considered the *sexy* color for both men and women, I think because it can increase the heart rate? Thus, you are getting a different reaction that if it were, say, yellow.

Sundress, resort/vacation, clubbing. Of course, one could throw out the rules and wear it anywhere they like - hee hee! I think in a pinch and with clever coverage and/or footwear, it's a day/night and date night dress too. Colour is great! And I agree that environment probably sets the tone. Heck, in some places this is as dressy as it gets!

Although it was a long time ago, I grew up in Southern California. Therefore, this dress seems ordinary to me and it could be any of the categories mentioned. For me, everything is determined by the footwear.

vacation/beach only to my eye. its the cut, the revealing-ness, the everything. your other dresses have a lot more "conservative" cleavage. Also the red one ( of yours) although red doesn't equate " sex alert" to me.

It may of course also be the way the model's dress is plastered on her but I suspect the cleavage and length combined on your gorgeous body would be "ouch; too hot for the public on a normal day" as well!

Mo, you lend a playful vibe to your dresses which goes a long way towards mitigating the come-hither effect projected by the model. But it is a dress that will be noticed by men of all ages who see you on the street going about your daily life. Are you comfortable with this? Because I suspect that is why your BF is deeming it to be date/club wear.

I see it as a vacation beach sundress kind of look. To my eye, the fabric and lack of coverage on top combined with the length and the flowy fabric says beachy.

That to me is lounge wear or "at home" clothing... which you may wear out to Target or frozen yogurt with the girls or L.A. in general.
