Quickish hair advice - YouLookFab Forum

I have an appointment for Wednesday and I was thinking to get some new highlights. At first I was convinced I am going straight to white and need highlights to cover it up—therefore I had highlights done in May. I think though that my white scare was just an early mid-life crisis brought on by the gawd-awful lighting in my bathroom at work. It’s criminal lighting in there! Don’t ever try it. In any case the placid Mr. Scarlet who usually has NO OPINION hinted gently that I had a roots issue going on now I don’t mind letting the roots grow out, but I thought that adding some highlights in a different shade might add some depth and interest to my heavy mop. However, I am a complete hair-coloring novice and have basically no idea about anything as far as it goes. One thing I am concerned about is that when I get blonde highlights I lose a bit my natural red tint. I guess with age that will go anyway (or be a hefty up-keep). Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks for being patient with me. Hair and me is just an on-going story. You can see a very recent hair photo on Lynn’s meet-up thread, and here is also a very recent one from the back. The dirty mirror is not mine, I swear!

ETA: Any thoughts on bangs/no bangs also much appreciated.

Hi Scarlet - How did I miss your previous post? That Berlin meet up sounds like a fun day! About the highlights, they do require lots of upkeep. Highlights can be very pricey where I live and for my hair type (between $100-$200) and they will only last a few weeks before I need to color again, so I've only done it a few times. You can ask your hairdresser to do a root touchup if you want to maintain the color or you can color your entire hair back to your old color.

Low lights may be your answer or a combo of both . Don't go too light at the roots...too much maintenance:(

I have had highlights professionally twice. The finer they are done, the less painful the grow out. Chunky highlights are way more noticeable. I have a similar somewhat reddish tint as you and the highlights can sometimes turn a tad brassy or orangey if they are too light. I would say a darker color is a great idea - kind of high and low lights mixed. I just decided to grow all color out, myself, this year and am pulling the greys one by one lol!

I also think that bangs are more forgiving in the winter, than in the summer when they get all sweaty and sticky and adhere to your forehead. EEEEE.

I"m trying to grow my hair out to approximation of this. Your waves are much nicer than mine.

And agree you need high and low lights. Also I think lots of foils in smaller sections look better than big chunky swaths of color.

I have nothing to add re. hair coloring (and Taylor has spoken!) but I just had to say that your description is very funny. "The placid Mr. Scarlet" sounds like a character in a Agatha Christie novel :)!

These responses are so helpful! The only thing is, even after googling it, I am not 100% sure what lowlights are--is that necessarily darker than my natural shade or just darker than the lightest color?

You can low light back to your natural shade For not only depth and dimension, but, it would make your current too light highlights look less overpowering and give you a more subtle natural highlighted look. And you would have a much less noticeable line of demarcation at the root
Have your stylist answere all your questions clearly so you understand all your options and together can plan your next color choice:)

a good colorist is worth her / his weight in gold. i wish i had access to taylor.

i agree with her, re reducing the difference between your natural color and highlights for more dimension and less maintenance. younseem like a low maintenance gal.

i find heavy/blunt bangs overpowering especially since you have very fine features. if you want to try bangs, you could go with shorter layers anound the face approximating bangs, similar to goldie hawn. they seem to be quite flattering on the nearly middle aged like me.
