Hi ladies, I had a quick question for everyone:

What are you classifying cardigans you collect to Finds under? I have, apparently, used both "Jackets" and "Knitwear" but neither feels quite right. Am I missing something more obvious? Thanks!

I actually just switched all of mine from Knitwear to Jackets! Mainly because I was trying the Random Outfit Generator and had so few actual jackets or coats that I wanted more toppers in the rotation.

I always forget that for Angie, knitwear means sweaters. In my head it means t-shirts, so it always takes me a few seconds to remember what category to use.

To answer your actual question: I think I've got mine all categorized as knitwear. With the outfit generator categorizing most cardigans as jackets might make sense, since that's the function they serve as a layer. Maybe we need an 'indoor toppers' category?

I have to admit I never classified anything until we had the ROG! Then it kept giving me cardigans as "tops" so I went back and marked them all as jackets.

Also, by the way, ROG thinks umbrellas are purses.

I "think" I've been using knitwear or knitted jackets, so I haven't been consistent.

Knitwear. Jackets does make sense though. There was another category I was struggling with as well, but it escapes me right now. I'll come back and ask if I can figure it out!

Eta - it's tank tops. I've been putting them with knitted tops and tees, but to me they aren't the same. What do you think?

Knitwear here too. I struggle with this too, in here and in my spreadsheet. In the latter they are in major category of toppers, for obvy reasons.

Good question! Until recently, I would have called them "knitwear." But since Angie's post on wardrobe numbers, I decided, in tracking my own numbers, that it makes sense to classify them as "jackets." They aren't shirts or pullovers, so this category made the most sense from the available choices.

Jackets here - but that's because I didn't actually enter anything in Finds until the ROG. Now I have similar items to my entire wardrobe in there, because the ROG is so much fun I consider cardigans toppers, so I put them in a category that I knew the ROG would agree.

I've classified everything as knitwear. In the ROG, does knitwear have the same function as jackets? If not, I should also re-classify.

Thanks for all the replies! Knitwear was by far the winner here (10 to 3), which is where most of mine are as well. However after the ROG I had started moving some over to jackets because I wanted them to show up there in the generated outfits as toppers. Still doesn't quite feel right though

Elizabeth, yes tanks can be tricky too. I've been putting plainer layering jersey tanks under knitwear, and silky blousy shell-type tanks under blouses. Basically thinking of them as either sleeveless tees or sleeveless blouses.

Denise, I think knitwear will show up in the ROG outfits as tops only. This is why I asked the question actually, I was getting a jacket+cardigan in several generated outfits.

I was calling them knitwear, but am coming across the same problem with the ROG - getting an outfit with a long thick cardigan and a short fitted blazer. So maybe I should change them to jackets.

I too had put them in knitwear, but the ROG outfits didn't make sense with them in knitwear, so now they are jackets. Oh well!

There *is* such a thing as a sweater cost/jacket in my book (which I determine by weight and wind blocking capacity). Otherwise, knitwear it is.

I know! A sweater can be used in place of a jacket, particularly a drapey statement cardi. I also use the knitwear option!

Sounds like knitwear is pretty universally preferred but those of us using the ROG have moved them over to jackets so they show up as toppers. Personally I'd prefer them to be in knitwear but am going to move them all to jackets so they work with the ROG. Thanks for all the responses!
