Question re: white denim jacket

I don't know but I want a white denim jacket, too. Maybe heading for my thrift store this week in hope.

My quick guess is that you don't need white elsewhere, but you might need a pop of light, at minimum. It would depend on the outfit, no?

My first thought was no, a white jacket would work with anything as long as it wasn't too visually heavy. But my second thought is that maybe it has to do with your coloring? Maybe white is easier if it's closer to your hair and skin color? My legs come pretty close to matching a white shirt this time of year ...

I think white denim probably looks really nice with lots of colors, esp. blue, red and black. And I've seen white denim jackets over summer dresses of florals, stripes, etc. that look nice.

My white denim jacket has not seen much use - it got warm so fast I just didn't get a chance to wear it. But I did try it on with several outfits and liked the way it looked. It took me a year or so to really start wearing my white denim jeans which I really love now- I don't know why, white denim isn't really so much of a "reach" but for some reason it has been just a little out of my comfort zone. Maybe white jackets seem to stand out more?

I don't think you need more white - try treating the white as the "pop of color" in your outfit. I know I'm not keeping this dress, but this is the best example I had... Although there is only one piece of white, IMO the outfit still feels balanced because of the hair-boot bookending and the continued column of color created by the dress.

I agree to temper the amount of white in the outfit since the white is so strong. I like Rae's example.

Just a word of caution...after finding YLF, I was so eager to find a white denim jacket that I wasn't picky enough. The one I bought is nice but I wish it were more cropped to wear with dresses. I tend to wear it mostly as a topper with dresses for spring/summer. Now that I've found one that works better, I'm hesitant to buy it, or at least pay full price, when there's a perfectly good jacket in the closet.

Yes, I agree with Denise that the white is too bright to do a matching jacket and jeans. To me, that would be along the same lines as doing a jacket and jeans in the same shade of cobalt. However, I did like wearing my white denim jacket with light wash jeans shorts.

I like the white jacket in concept especially with cute sundresses in the summer, but am having a REALLY difficult time finding one that fits well and doesn't make me feel "bulky". It's strange too because white pants are what used to make me self conscious and now I love them but feel weird in the jackets. Wearing both would make me feel like Elvis when he did his tours! Or...Maybe John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever. I could never rock both pieces the way Bianca Jagger did that great white suit. YSL wasn't it?

Well, you *could* do white from head to toe, if you were going for the whole column of color thing which is trendy right now (see example pics below, from stylesightings.com, one of my favorites sources for inspiration, obviously, since I trot out the pics all the time!!). I think this looks especially fab if there are different textures going on, which you wouldn't necessarily get with a denim on denim ensemble :).

White jackets are an absolute staple of my wardrobe in spring and summer (I have one very cropped one, and one not as cropped). I wear my them all the time without necessarily having any other white in my outfit.

Of course, as cinnamon fern said, when I'm wearing a dress they're always bookended by my pasty-white legs!

I probably wouldn't wear a white denim jacket with white jeans. I wouldn't say it *couldn't* be done, but it would be tricky. Jonesy's examples are great for white-on-white looks.

I don't think you need additional white, especially in your case because your hair adds an additional light element so you have some built in lightness balancing. I wouldn't wear a white denim jacket with white JEANS, but I would wear it with white TROUSERS. And I would also wear a white blazer with white jeans. I happen to love (and will happily wear) that white-on-white column look, though :}

Those are very inspiring photos, Jonesy. I'll admit the idea of wearing white head to toe (other than my wedding dress 10 years ago) terrifies me. LOL. But those are actually quite stylish, urban, and not prim-looking. I am going to study them further.

Shannon, I think a white denim jacket is a lovely and striking neutral piece and you can wear it with every colour, and be dressed up or down. Just depends on what statement you want to make that particular day!

Wouldn't your natural colouring also be part of the equation? In Shannon's case, your hair already provides some lightness I think, together with your fair complexion. I'm not sure any more white is necessarily needed, though it's always nice to harmonize with repeating colours/shapes/textures... but NOT, I think, essential. After all, you wouldn't ask that question with other colours, right? Or would you?

I am so glad you asked this - I have a white denim jacket that I just washed the heck out of to get it ready for summer (seemed to take on some yellowing just hanging for last 7 months) and a little white crop blazer to pull out.

When I use my white handbag, I like to pick up a little bit of white somewhere else in the outfit or it seems to stark. Like pair with a top with a touch of white in pattern or some pearls. Today I wore a black pump that has white stitching that shows nicely and it was enough for me. That's just my little comfort zone thing though.

Last summer I regularly wore my white denim jacket over bright dresses like Rae has in her pic - although I personally would stick with a summery-looking shoe and preferably something in a lighter color, just to bookend vaguely. I am certainly pale-skinned so there's that bookending happening too.

I prefer not to wear a denim jacket with jeans, whether they are not the same color; it just looks too bulky and weird to me, so I wouldn't do a white denim jacket with white jeans. I like the contrast of denim with a dress or a floaty skirt. Besides, in the summer denim jacket plus jeans is way too hot!
