Question re: returning item

I bought this dress online from Gap

I quite liked it and wore it around the house a few times. I washed it according to the instructions and dried it on low and when I took it out of the dryer, the seams at the bottom were twisted at least 3-4" around. I am considering taking it back but since I washed it, I'm not sure that is right.

What would you do?

Returning it for a quality issue when washing is totally legitimate in my opinion. Garments are made to be worn and washed. If something goes wrong during this normal process - especially the first time - then a return is merited.

I agree with IK. Taking it back now just cause you don't like it would be wrong (as it is worn) but you should expect to be able to launder it as directed and still have a useful garment. I'd say it's defective and take it back in heartbeat. Washing your clothing is not optional and one time wearing is not an option I'm willing to pay for either!

I agree. Although most stores are not as understanding and gracious as Nordstrom, they are still obliged to take this back, IMO. You shouldn't have problems washing a garment the very first time, or any time.

Agree. If you can show that following usual care the garment becomes unwearable, then back it goes. This type of thing often happens when garment is made with thread or zippers that are not preshrunk or mixed materials behave differently, along with other issues.

I would take it back as long as the care instructions don't say "Hand wash" or "Line Dry" or something similar.

My daughter had that exact issue with a Gap dress a couple of years ago. They gave her a hard time about returning it, but she prevailed.

Providing you followed the washing instructions definitely return as its a quality issue x

Return and if they give you a hard time write customer service (info on their website) - I've found them quite responsive and they should understand it's a legit return if the store clerk doesn't for some reason.

Return without any shame! I hate when this kind of thing happens (Forever 21 items often DISINTEGRATE upon washing!)...

if you followed the washing instructions, and it did that, I would return for quality issue. If they give you a hard time, I would give it right back to them, especially if ease of washing was a reason you bought it (which is for me).

Returning it is perfectly reasonable in this case. I had no qualms about returning a slip after wearing it because it rode up.

how sad. Unrortunately, GAP policies are not as generous. Never hurts to ask though.

Thanks everyone. I am returning the skimmer jeans so will take it along and see what happens. I was really disappointed when I saw how badly it had twisted. I expect more from Gap.

I returned the dress today. The sales clerk said that normally you need to ship back defective merchandise when you purchase online but he took it without any problem.

Thanks again. I was considering keeping it and wearing it for cleaning or sleeping but it is better to return items that are not made well.

If you followed the care instructions & the garment shrank or twisted you can return it. If you've had it a long time I wouldn't think so but if you haven't then you shouldn't have a problem.
