Question of the day: Do you style your hair before your haircut appt?

Mary's post asking us to ignore her hair because she was on her way to the salon made me want to ask this.

Do you style your hair before you go, or do you go in a la naturale?

I almost always do my hair before I go in. On occasion, I get up and fiddle a little bit just to get it presentable, but more often than not, I rinse, dry and style my hair to hop in the car to see my stylist... even if it is the first thing I"m doing for the day. The reason I do this is twofold... one is silly pride I guess... I don't want her to think that I run around town looking like a slob between my appointments, but the other is that I like for her to see how I like to style my hair and what is and isn't working well with my current style.

Does anyone else do this, or am I just over the top weird?

Nope, I go in with my hair in a bun and usually washed the day (or two) before.

NO in capital letters. I know both my stylists as friends outside of the salon, so they know what my hair looks like on good and bad days. But I honestly don't do much to it even when I 'do' my hair.

Well. usually my haircut appointments are after scheduled after I get off work, so my hair has been styled that morning but is usually pretty flat/disheveled by the time I make it to the salon.

I would cry if my stylist ever quit or left the area. I've followed her to two salons so far (she was trying to find one that was a better fit for her personality and talents) and got my mom, sister, and sister's friend to go to her as well. I've reached the level of trust where I can go in with a very vague idea or general description of what I want, and know that the cut I end up with will be impeccable. That being said, I let my cut go waaaay too long between appointments, because it keeps on looking good and behaving itself for long past its "expiration date!"

I don't do my hair, as in 'spend a lot of time on it'. I used to, though, and applied the same routine when visiting the salon. Yes, it's stupid, I know. I've actually washed my hair and then gone to the salon (directly) and say to my hairdresser 'please don't wash it with shampoo because I've already done it', and it's not because I'm cheap, but just because I tend to have greasy hair and wash it daily (softly, though, so it's still in good condition) and don't like people on the street seeing me with dirty hair.

Yes, for the same reasons as you. If I don't style it (which doesn't take that long), how would they know what's working or what isn't? Plus, I generally go after work so it's styled anyway.

I generally wash it a day or so before (when shampooing is part of the cut) but dont run a flat iron thru it, cuz I want her to see where Im having any problems..and that my hair looks way different the day *after* a shampoo, for some reason. My place offers free bang/nape trim between appts, then I always go in with it 'fixed' the way I want...

I also wanted to add that one helpful thing my stylist does is that after doing the basic cut "wet", she will blow-dry my hair and do some cleanup while it's dry, and then she will flatiron it so I can see how the cut looks when it is flat as well. Since my hair is naturally pretty lifeless and limp without the help of a good cut and a bit of product, it's useful to know how I'll like the cut when it is lying flat, too.

No, I don't go in done up. Then again, I don't do my hair ...

There was a time when I routinely curled and styled my hair every day. I am just not interested in my hair right now. I wish I were more motivated about my hair. It has been falling out again. Taking Biotin helps a bit.

I always do. I usually make my hair appointments for first thing in the morning, and I shampoo, blow dry and style as usual. The same stylist has done my hair for years, but I vary the cut frequently. I want him to see the way the previous cut has grown out and how I'm currently styling it. I think it's easier to discuss changes in length and style when he can see how my current style is working...or not working, as the case may be.

No, I think it's important that the stylist sees how my hair is growing out...it might affect how she trims it.

That being said, I don't think she ever sees me with dry hair...my hair is usually shampooed and wet by the time my stylist lays eyes on me.

ETA Now that I read Blonda's reply, I suppose I do style it "as normal" in the morning, as my appointments are usually late afternoon...but that's just routine as usual. Like I said, I mostly want my hairstylist to see what kind of trouble I might be having with styling...but that usually doesn't happen because I have wet hair by the time I hit her chair.

No, but then I don't style my hair. I wash it each morning and brush it away from my face and that's it.

I'm not proud of that! It's just what I do each day with it at its current length. If I had a cut that needed more styling I think that would be a very good idea!

I absolutely do, just like any other day.

But then it takes a second when you have as little hair on your head as I do.

I don't. I like to bring in my hair unvarnished, so my stylist can see what state it's in. She's a master; she can tell me how healthy I am by looking at my hair. Also, I like my hair to style itself... so that's probably what my stylist should see.

I really like this question. 'Cuz actually, I do think about it every time I go...

I do wash and style my hair as usual before going to the salon. I want the stylist to see how I style her cut and what is or is not working as I grow it out. I am growing out from a super short pixie to a shoulder length bob.
I usually do my hair at night, wash and blow dry, because it looks better after I sleep on it.

Does putting it in a ponytail count?

I always ask for "wash and go" hair b/c that's real life for me, so I don't style it and I like it if she doesn't either. I need a good cut (with a few layers), a little product and air dry -- the less you do with my hair the better it is.

I have 2 stylists right now: 1 I know from my social circle and the other lives in a city where I go for doctor appointments every few months -- I used to babysit her when when I was a teenager! Both do great low-maintenance curly-do hair.

Yep. My stylist always has to wash the Schwartzkopf "Glued" out of my hair, but she always sizes me up before she shampoos to assess just how much to cut.

I get a trim every three weeks to keep my short thick hair from getting too bushy.

In my defense, I was only going for a color touch-up on Saturday morning, so I rolled out of bed and staggered into the salon as-is. If I'm going to get a cut, I might not go quite so wild-looking, because yes, I want my stylist to see how it's growing out so we can discuss what he's going to do that day.

I don't style my hair ever, so my answer may not count for much...

But back when I was blowdrying it straight, I still wouldn't style it. I wanted my stylist to see it at its absolute, bedraggled worst so she knew what she was up against :p

Amazingly, of all the stylists I saw in my natural state, not a single one of them had the inclination to tell me "hey, your hair is actually not straight. Maybe you should try wearing it naturally." In fact even now, they ALWAYS just straighten it after cutting. It has gotten to a point where I just decline the post-appointment blowdry. It seems like few stylists out there know how to work with wavy hair. It's just easier to straighten it.

I don't. When Mr. Hairstylist said, after I had apologetically tried to explain on one occasion that I had no time to sort my hair as there was some family emergency: "Relax, we are here to sort it out for you".

I do the same as any other time - that is to say, absolutely nothing. My styling consists of washing every two days and combing carefully with a wide tooth comb. Although I would probably style it before the appointment if I did actually style it normally, for the reasons you mentioned.

I used to when I had time to style my hair. Since having children that happens less frequently and I'm so happy to have someone else do the work that I figure why waste my time? I do feel guilty sometimes, but my appointments are usually on weekend mornings.

And Mary-- I was not judging you at all. I was just wondering what camp everyone fell into, and if I was kooky.

Oh, and I always put alot of thought into my outfit as well.. I figure she gets a better idea of what suits me in a hairstyle when she gets to know my style persona. If I show up in mom clothes, I'm liable to get a mom haircut :-0

I cut my own hair; so I guess I style my hair first because I don't usually get to it until the end of the day when I visit my "salon" :p

Not if I'm going straight there. I usually put on a hat.

I style it if I'm out for the day and getting the haircut on the way home.
