Question: How to wear scarf with button down shirts? (Kiwigal inspired question)

In the past week I have been wearing button down shirts. One was white and felt stark so I put a green sweatshirt on top. One was a long tunic style and I paired it with a necklace and puffer vest. Kiwigal suggested that I might try wearing a long scarf with the tunic style button top to break it up a bit. I think she was on to something good. The problem is that I experimented a bit with my scarves and couldn't figure out how to wear one in a way I liked. I would appreciate your ideas, any pictures, and if you have specific ways to tie them that would be even better. Thanks!

I wear a scarf with a button front shirt often. I have large squares that I bias fold and tie like a man's tie, or use an oblong the same way. I pop the collar on my shirt. My other favorite way is using a 36 inch square. Put it on a flat surface, fold in half with the fold at the top and the open end nearest you. Take the upper right and lower left corners, pick up and put around your neck. Tie those two ends together, adjust so you have a pretty drape-y cowl effect. Very easy once you get the knack of it, this is the one I do most often. And it looks nice under a blazer, too.

I saw this on the blog Franish and filed it away mentally because I had the same question as you. Here Fran basically just wears a scarf over chambray the same way one would over a tee/sweater. (The photo is clearly a quick shot at the store, but I think the look is nice.)

Most of my scarves are long skinny rectangles so I tend to wear them outside the collar, looped or knotted, kinda like a long pendant necklace would be worn, although obviously bulkier. I'm not the biggest fan of volume at my neck so I'm not sure I'd do an infinity scarf with a collared shirt.

I would probably pop the collar and wear a longer scarf outside the collar, either unlooped or looped in the middle. I thought the shirt with puffer worked well it was when the puffer was off that I thought of a scarf.

I have seen you look great is some scarves which is partly why I thought of it.
