Question for Greg: Open links in new window?

Greg,
I know you've been busy making all sorts of improvements, which are most appreciated, but could I request just one more little thing?

I was wondering if it would be possible to have links open in a new window. The way it is now, if I'm reading a thread and click on a link it replaces YLF and then I have to go back and try to re-find my place in the thread I was reading. It's a bit annoying and cumbersome. Any chance of making a change?

I always right click and open in a new tab, or if I am on a tablet I tap and hold and then choose open in a new page. I like building up a stack of tabs and then looking at all the pretties in one go.

If you hit control and click on the link, it will open in a new tab. That's how I open them so they don't replace YLF.

I must be a klutz, because I have trouble getting this to work on my MAC. I'll keep trying.

I think on a Mac it is command + click.

A vote from the other side: It annoys me when websites presume to open another tab or window for me. I always right-click and choose "Open in New Tab". I like how YLF currently handles links.

This works on my Mac running Leopard.

Sorry Parsley. I hope you get it figured out on your computer.

I do command-click when opening links on my Macs... but it doesn't work that way on my iPad, which is my main web surfing tool these days. Also frustrating since image upload isn't possible from the iPad either.

So another vote here for links opening in a new window.

Janet, just hold your finger on the link, and a window will pop up and you can choose to open in another tab.

I'm the opposite -- I would rather the Web site open a new tab or window for me, rather than leaving the page I'm on. I'm too lazy to control-click

There is a problem with making all links open in a new window, which is that people like Sylvie will have no way to make links open in the same window. Everybody will be forced to open new windows.

At least with the way it is now you can choose to open in a new window with a very simple key+click.

In Windows:

CTRL + click: open in a new tab
SHIFT + click: open in a new window

On the Mac:

CMD + click: open in new tab
SHIFT + click: open in a new window

If you don't like the key combinations then you can also right click on a link to get a contextual menu that includes the options of opening the link in a new window or tab. On the Mac the same menu can be reached using CRTL + click.

On the iPad or iPhone (and I think Android too) just do a long press on the link and then choose to open in a new tab in the menu that pops up.

While I still would prefer it to happen automatically, shift + click does work on my Mac, as you said, to open a new window.

One thing I should mention is that I have on my to-do list a feature that would allow individual members to specify (as a setting) that they want to open links in new windows.

But this would only apply to links in forum posts or bog posts. Are those the links you were thinking of when you initially asked the question?

I am OK with the way it is. I don't mind using the back button to go back to YLF. But thanks for teaching me something new! Cmd/cntrl + click to open link in a new tab.
