Question for all the talented sewing Fabbers...

I am obsessed with this H & M shirt, which is all sold out. How hard do you think it would be to have it made? I can sew, but not from scratch. But if I showed someone a picture, would they be able to make a copy? Then I could do a color I want and a perfect fit.

Any seamstress/tailor worth their salt could make this for you...but for nowhere near 50 bucks. If they know how to make a pattern, they should be able to create a very similar garment.

Is there a seam at the waist all the way around? If so, it looks like a regular oxford cloth shirt from the waist up, and a peplum added to the bottom. If you found a shirt that fit you well, you might be able to make the peplum out of a second matching shirt. You'd have to evaluate how much fabric you need, if you could make enough out of back, fronts, and sleeves. If I were attempting the project, I'd buy an XXL for the second shirt, to maximize the amount of fabric available.

It's not that difficult, but I agree it would cost a lot more than the H&M version. And I had a similar thought to JAileen--if I were doing it, I might take a shirt I had and add the asymmetrical peplum in a coordinating fabric. I like her idea of starting with two shirts, although I wonder whether a second shirt of any size would give you enough uninterrupted fabric to get the peplum right.

I think it would be $50 well spent at H&M. I myself could never make it for that price. To begin with decent oxford cloth would be at least $15 per yard, and this shirt would take at a minimum 2 yards, so there is $30 right there without any money for labor figuring out how to copy the pattern and then sew it up. This is the dilemma of the fast-fashion, cheap-labor clothing that we can purchase now.

I just thrifted my granddaughter a very cute Forever 21 dress up skirt out of some sparkly lace for $5. It has a fashion-statement zipper up the back that would cost me at least $3 to buy in a fabric store. Never mind the lace, lining and elastic components.

If you love the shirt, buy it, in other words.

Una, hope you don't mind me saying but I have been a little surprised at how much you like this shirt. I am worried that you wouldn't feel it a good look when you have it on. Don't you find it hard to have shirts that are so highnecked and closely fitted on your top half?

Can you follow a pattern? Some of the McCalls patterns look similar particularly M6925. Some of the Vogue ones look interesting too. You might be able to " frankenpattern " it between two patterns. One resource I like for sewing is PatternReview.com .As a paid member I can read reviews older than 6 months old . New reviews ( 6 months and younger are free though) . Reviewers post about how easy or hard something is, how correct the instructions are and shortcuts or alternative ways to do things. There are also links to other sewists blogs.

Just to clarify, the shirt is sold out, otherwise I would definitely buy it! I think I should see if one of my relatives in India can have this made, which is a lot cheaper. Or beg Fabbers who have an H & M near them to check in and see if any are in store. Looking at the size chart I think I'd be a 12 at H & M! How crazy is that?

Anne, what I love is the flared asymmetry. I have a similar Prairie Underground shirt. Although you are right that it could be all wrong.

This would not be something to tackle on your own for sure. I agree with the others, this would be much more than 50 dollars to have custom made.

It's not really a shirt - it's a semi-fitted dress bodice above the waist seam.

Una, I'll be in the same mall as the Albany, NY H & M this Thurs. I don't mind stopping in and checking to see if they have it - in fact, I was thinking of stopping in and looking for some silky cargo/track pants for myself. Since I might not check back on this post, PM me if you want me to look for it for you.

I can't speak for this particular shirt, but I don't think you'd be a 12 at H&M. I'm between a 12 and a 14 in most mass market mall brands (BR, AT, etc. - I squeeze into my 12s, but if I had to buy new, I might need a 14 due to some extra squish) and I recently tried on some H&M 14s that fit. So I'd say it's pretty TTS or runs slightly small, but not many sizes small.

I would think that it would be doable in India for a decent price but I don't think that it is a frequent request and I think fit on the top half is important to making this work.

The original H&M version may be very long on you on the long side. Before investing in any additional effort (other than asking fabbers to find ya one) I might take a well-fitting slim button down with similar proportions and pin some stiff-ish fabric on the bias to it to see if you really like it on as much as it should work in theory.

I'm also wondering where and when you'd wear this-- it is awesome but all I can think of is how awkward this would be in a car after having been seatbelted, smooshed under a puffer, crunched under a desk.

OMG, thanks to all of you who are willing to check. Chances are it's not there, but if so, I am fairly certain from looking at the measurements that I would need a 10 or 12. I know that sounds crazy, but the bust for a 12 is listed at only 37.5! And my one jacket from H&M is a 10. And I have a thick waist. I would actually like this to drape.
