Question for all leather jacket wearers

I am of the opinion that I've been a good girl this year, so I asked Santa for a leather jacket for Christmas I would prefer one that I can wear indoors as a layering piece, and outdoors when the temps aren't frigid. I was thinking a cropped style.

So my questions are:

What color do you think is most versatile, black, brown, or cognac?
As I have never owned a leather jacket, do you have any purchasing tips that I could pass along to Santa?
Since Santa is an internet shopper, any favorite websites?

Does your Santa deliver jackets to the middle east?! I want one too. I promise I have been a good girl this year too

I wish to have a white cropped moto or a vest would do too (I saw one in Zara )

Pssst.....white or off white are great options, too....and so are taupe and grey. Black could be quite harsh on you and most of your wardrobe is cool so brown or cognac might not be ideal.

Try Danier!! Some Canadian elves would be happy to facilitate the arrangement.

I'm going to start looking for a leather jacket soon, too, and will start my search at Nordstrom. At this point in my style journey, I'm super picky, especially about something pricey like a leather jacket.

Karie - what is the dominant color in your wardrobe and what color of topper do you prefer? This is a big investment so you want something that plays nicely with the other pieces in your closet but you also want it to be a color that you love. So what color shoes, bags do you prefer. What looks good with your skin. I second Nordies - great return, excellent selection and tons of reviews and great customer service for questions. I do like a cropped style and you should read the threads on light weight leather was it Zapotee as well and Rae who had threads? So you can maximize indoor and outdoor potential. Good luck!!

I love my black leather jacket but tend to wear my cognac leather more because I feel like I can remix it with black and denim more easily.
What are your colors?

Mine is in a sort of caramel/ light toffee color. I would have never thought it would match most of the items in my wardrobe but it does.

I think a tan or warm taupe would be smashing with your coloring. I am basing this on your tan/black doggie sweater outfit with the white jeans. Have fun and keep us posted.

Oh, I hope you get it! I have a black traditional moto but would love a cropped sleeker one in brown. This one is on my Christmas list but it is beyond the budget so I don't think it will be under the tree. (sad face.) Maybe you will like it? It's a gorgeous chocolate color and I just love the shape of it. Great ratings too. Fingers crossed for you!

Good to hone in on possible colors. Take some measurements and it might help you tell what length to target.
With all that, I would be prepared to try & return several times-- style, color and size- wise. So it's hard to treat it as a surprise under the tree--there are lots of variables and you want to get them right.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I've aways had success ordering from Nordies, so I might start there. I'll also have to take a peek at the Zara website, but their sizes run a little small.

Suz and JulieJohn, I was also thinking of taupe or tan. I agree it would go better with my coloring than black or brown. If t was an outdoor-only jacket it wouldn't matter so much to me, but I really want this to be one I can wear indoors as well. I do love cognac, so maybe the right shade.....or maybe it's a color that suits me in my dream world

I have an old, old, old faux leather outdoor jacket that is the color of butternut squash, and I love that shade. I only wish I could find what I am looking for in that color.

Gryffin, I don't always follow the rules, but with my complexion I try to wear lighter/more neutral colors near my face.

Cream or gray...hum...now I hadn't thought of that, but I do love my Mural Bomber and that's cream and gray.

When I told DH (alias Santa) that I wanted a leather moto jacket, he replied, "Leather mojo? What's that?" (He's a good listener)

Tan or cognac get my vote. Black is classic, but I tend to feel it's more stylized. When you wear one, you are James Dean, Tank Girl, etc. etc.

Do you wear cropped cardigan sweaters now? If so, what color cardigan gets the most wear? That may be a strong tip-off. White and black cardi's always get the most wear in my wardrobe, and that is true about my pleather jackets as well. If I could ever find leather versions of same jackets I'd totally invest. But I haven't, yet.

I know black is supposed to be harsh for us fair blondes but I wear a lot of black, my urban area is big on black, black is practical, and yes, black is the most frequently worn sweater in my closet. So black makes sense and leather at least has sheen for interest.

I wore my white pleather jacket to death -- it's starting to crack and I still love it so much I'm contemplating clever & stylish rescue measures to get some more use out of it. That said, my hair dresser has been darkening up my highlights in recent year so the white doesn't work quite as well as it did before. Or maybe my eye just tired of it.

I also have a buttery yellow jacket which is ages old and probably out of date style wise, and more of a heavy outdoor jacket, but I hold on to it precisely because I adore the color. It comes out only a few days each fall.

I just posted a K/R- I am debating on a soft gray-greenish leather jacket now (not cropped). I can see this color working well in my wardrobe. Compliments my eye color - so that is another aspect to consider: what color are your eyes? What color jacket would flatter them?

I have ..ahem...3 indoor leather jackets and none of them is black. Mine are brown, taupe and white. Right now I am in love with the white one so it gets my vote.
..but tan or taupe or flattering grey would be great too.

Shiny, I would love to find a buttery colored leather jacket - my old faux one is that color and I love it. My eyes are blue, and the sweaters I wear the most are gray and off-white.

Here are two jackets I found on the Danier website. They ship to the US but I don't know about returns, I'd have to call and ask. The second one reminds me of the Mural Bomber, so it's probably too similar for me to consider.

First leather jacket ever...cognac which 100% was a match/ bookend for my hair. Got it in August, and if I never, ever, wore it again, I would still have had value out of it for the times I've worn it. I do have a second/new leather jacket in my 'signature' colour. Though i haven't worn it as much, it makes me happy to have it on my closet,and I think it will get lots of wear when the season is right.

So...long story short...a jacket that is a neutral for you will get ++ wear and a jacket in your signature colour might get less wear, but might also make you very happy.

I don't have any leather in lighter shades but if I ever get one I might go for a light taupe (I'm thinking of a warm toned light color between gray and tan)

I'm also thinking that perhaps I should go faux for a moto jacket, since I would be wearing it inside, and to work, and I work in a school with 2nd graders - not exactly the place to be wearing your good leather jacket. Maybe I should save the real leather jacket purchase for a nice, outdoor only, dressier piece.

If you want to wear it a lot inside... I'd actually go for real leather and use a spray to protect it from stains. But then I suffocate in faux leather.

This one is a gorgeous taupe IRL - really fantastic when you put it on. The sides are ribbed but not fabric, so it really hugs your shape nicely. People have been loving the La Marque stuff in general this year.

My most versatile is black (and I have seven). But that's for casual and dressy. My most versatile color-wise is taupe, so I'd say brown on your list. But, this is because black is technically a color I shouldn't wear, and taupe looks nice on me. So, what color of neutral is your best color? I'd go with that one.

Hubby has only one leather jacket, and it's navy blue. So I'd say any neutral color that flatters you is the way to go!

I have black, white, and cream cropped moto jackets. (Geez, what's wrong me with?! Ha!) black is my staple but you mentioned using it as a layering piece, which is what I use my cream one for. It works GREAT with gray and black.

I have black, electric blue and olive green leather jackets. Not too surprisingly, the electric blue sees the least amount of use! So echoing all the people who are saying you should grab the color that works best with your wardrobe in general. I wear a lot of black, so I get the most use out of that jacket, and I also wear the olive green one a lot, but I almost always have to think about it when I wear it. The black one, though, is jacket I reach for whenever I'm not sure what I should be wearing or decide I don't care enough to think too much about it.

I agree with Jenava. Everyone is talking taupe and tan, but those would rank at the bottom of the list for me and my personal color preferences and style, so I would encourage you to look at your most-worn colors and consider what would play best with your wardrobe.

I have an embarrassing number of leather jackets, but I wear my black and cobalt blue leather ones the most because those colors work with so much of what I wear. The burgundy and white and olive ones are about to start getting a workout now that I'm back home. I love grey, but my grey one is old and a little big on me now, so it gets worn layered as ultra-casual outerwear.

If I could only keep one of mine, I would keep the black moto. I wear it the most.
