Question: any specs trends?

I’ve been wearing cat’s eye shaped specs frames for 6 years now. With an eye check-up end of March, and insurance eligibility for a new pair I’m starting to look around. It seems that lenses are getting bigger, but other than that, are there any shapes or colours that are trending?

I noticed that transparent frames seem popular, as well as gradient coloured frames and you’re right frames do seem to be getting bigger.

I’m also about due for new glasses, so I’m interested, too. I really love the clear frames, and have tried them on the last couple of times I got new glasses - therefore they may not be cutting edge. I wish they looked better on me but with my grayer hair, smallish eyes and winter pale skin, they seemed to wash me out even more.

The other style you show, Dee, are really good color.

Does anyone else have trouble with the plastic frames, without the adjustable, little nose pads, sliding right off their nose?

I was just at the optometrist after several years without an eye exam. I was hoping to find very round dark frames this time, but didn't see anything at the store that fit the image I had in mind. Then the doctor informed me I have cataracts and will likely have cataract surgery later this year. So looking too hard for a new stylish frame seemed kind of pointless. I ended up getting a very basic tortoiseshell rectangular frame, which suits me and works with everything.

Myself, I can't wear the little nose pads because they leave dents in my nose, and feel uncomfortable. I have seen at Zenni frames suitable for those with a lower bridge, if that's the way to phrase it, so the frames won't slide down your cheeks. I am not sure what eyeglasses trends are, but I agree that they seem to be getting larger. I wear glasses for reading and driving (which I forget a lot of the time). The last time I bought glasses was over 15 years ago.
I went to get my eyes checked in October and decided to buy new glasses for reading and driving. Our insurance covers new glasses yearly, and the optician had a BOGO special. My reading glasses are teal (the same colour as my eyes), and my distance glasses are dark green with gold arms.

Just following on about graduated colour frames- that was what my pinky-red ones from 2022 are like. So not a brand new trend. This is from Specsavers, a well known UK brand.

Cjh, I am with you and cannot wear glasses without nosepads! Something about the depth of the bridge of my nose makes them totally unworkable. They rest on my face and cheeks and slide down my nose — very uncomfortable! I actually had nose pads added to my green sunglasses frames and it worked great — my optometrist recommended it. Not all frame styles can accommodate that though.

I feel like more rounded styles are trending now — aviators and the like. Larger lenses too, which is great for progressive prescriptions but possibly challenging for folks with smaller faces. But I firmly believe in finding a style that transcends trend and suits one’s face and style!

I’ve been shopping for glasses, too. Lot of aviators, bold, chunky frames, unique shapes, and color, color, color. I’d love to see if a smaller aviator frame suits you. I think it might!

I ve just bought a new pair after my thirteen year old glasses literally fell apart.l was going to get them reproduced but l saw a pair that l really liked and l have been very pleased with them.After lhadbought them l was looking at all the glasses that other people l knew were wearing and basically we are all in rimless ,larger lens specs.l don’t know if this is a trend or not.l ve taken a really bad photo of them on my desk now!

I’m seeing bigger and bigger frames…..not so sure about this trend.
also seeing 2 trends that seem in opposition to each other….colorless frames, and frames in true colors (ie not in any way transparent). These examples are from a shop around the corner from me

The timing of this is perfect, as I just got new glasses last week, after several years. I've noticed the trend towards bigger frames, that make a statement.

I discovered a new-to-me eyewear line called Sabine Be https://https//sabinebe.com/en/ and I went down a rabbit hole of searching through all of their cool frames. Just ordered a pair last week!

I bought 3 pairs of new prescription glasses in Oct. 2022. Sunglasses and 2 pair of regular, plus more contact lenses. In Sept '23 I learn I'm ready for cataract surgery! I hope to get the glasses redone as reading glasses and progressive sunglasses.

So wise move to wait. Most of the time I don't need glasses at all now, just for reading and close up.

I want to add something about Warby Parker. I bought glasses from one of their B&M stores a couple of years ago and I have been thoroughly impressed with their customer service. Prompt, efficient and friendly — they are a very buttoned-up operation. Plenty of other retailers could learn from them in that regard.

Thanks Roberta for pointing out about the "Universal fit" because I didn't exactly knew what tthis means, and I have the same problem pads marking my somehow thin nose with a lover bridge (or higher ears?:-))--so all specs slide down on my nose after some time, especially if using a face moisturizer or make-up....:-(

And Thank Janet for telling us there is an option of having had nose pads added to some frames. I didn't knew about this!

Now, curious about what Angie will have to add....she is a pro in glasswear, too!:-)

Last time I shopped for eye glasses, I was directed to the children’s section. I wanted white or color and found mostly black and brown or some clear in the adult section. The people who order are getting lazy. Not getting what people want. Mailorder seems the way to go.

On the left earpiece you will see a series of numbers. One is the width, another is the earpiece length, and the smallest is the bridge width. I need a 15 but I think 17 or so is most common.

Timely discussion. I'm in search of new frames too. I don't care for the deeper lens as they always sit on my cheeks and are very uncomfortable. I do like nose pads because they keep the glasses in place better for me. But there aren't too many styles that I like with that feature. Like cjh I am intrigued by the clear frames but with gray hair and pale skin color...they do nothing for my look. I'm thinking of a stronger, more true color this time to add some pop to my look. Thinking I might have a more neutral pair and then a more fun color... to give me some options. I try to wear some strong color in at least one part of my outfit so the choice of strong color is tricky.

Concurring with what others have mentioned above. Bigger, chunkier, translucent, solid matte colors. I really like the more rectangular aviators floating around; the true teardrop ones aren’t great on me but the ones that are ever so slightly more squared off are good. That said, I typically reach for my acetate frames over wire frames because when I push metal frames with separate nose pads onto the top of my head, my hair gets instantly tangled! They’re better in the winter when I usually have a hat on anyway.

Your color palette is so tight, I feel like you could easily do a chunky statement-color frame in, say, red or burgundy.

Yep- bigger is back. Not a good time for little head people like me :/ Lots of color too. There were some I saw that even had real gold in the design.

Thank you for this post Carla! Was hoping Angie would chime in, but maybe she has post planned on frame update?? I've always hated wearing glasses but seeing Angie and all of you looking so fab in glasses I've learned to embrace mine and tried to update regularly.
