Q's about the J. Crew Rayner wide leg jeans

I ordered these jeans, and they arrived last week. I really like them... they fit really well through the waist area, and have a bit of ease through the hips/bum which I will really like in warmer weather. I do wonder if a size down would work, but am not going to go through the hassle and expense just to "see". Unless you tell me they look too big. Did anyone else size down?

So, my actual question... has anyone washed them yet? The denim is quite stiff, so I'm wondering if it softens up.

They look GREAT. They stretch out though. I don't like the way they look as much on Day #2.

Thanks Angie! Should I be concerned about the bagging? It's not too late to send them back and reorder. I'd rather not, but I want them to be right. I'm going to add in a view of my butt

And did they soften up with washing? Sounds like you've washed yours.

OK, ordered! They are on more of a sale now than they were, so the shipping hit won't be as painful as it might have been. Sometimes it's a pill one just has to swallow.

They look great on you Elizabeth. I agree from the back view they do look baggy which is not obvious in the other pics so sizing down may help. I am amazed at the hassle some of you ladies go through. I mostly shop in B and M stores.

I like them on you but agree they look a bit big. And if they stretch - then who knows how you will feel about them. You may not reach for them quite as much. I just returned a pair of jeans that did this within 20 minutes of wearing. They stretched so much I could feel wind...hahaha. I have no clue why some pants do this. I love how you styled them with the striped toppers!

That's too bad, Jane. The quality of them is lovely, although I guess i'll see if I still feel that way once I experience the "bagging".

thanks Jenni. Yeah, it's a hassle, but the truth is it happens very seldom (one learns to be VERY good at asking questions, reading reviews etc). And it helps keep me under a bit of control. Ha, sort of.

Thanks Glory. I know what you mean... some pants it bothers me, others it doesn't. Guess we'll see! I figure if Angie is good with these, they are probably fine. That's the reason I'd like to know if this fabric softens... stiff fabric that bags can look really clumpy. Softer ones can be more drapy, and easier to tolerate. For me.

Woah, are they ever on sale! I'm tempted. Did you order your usual jeans size? I'm out of it now with JCrew sizing and forget how their jeans fit. Stupid shipping charges too. But I quite like these! They look great on you, too.

Lisa, these are my normal size. And I've just ordered one size down. I'm really not sure what to suggest, as these are good in the waist for me, but they feel loose in the butt. And I'm a bit concerned about bagging, esp as the denim is quite thick. I think I'm going to really enjoy wearing them, so am swallowing the shipping to get it right. It's one of those situations where I think every time I put them on I'll wonder if I should have tried both sizes.

Bonnie, your find looks different. Are they Rayners in a different wash? I can't get it to load. Anyway, glad you are enjoying them. Emily, I hope they work for you, too.

I'm glad you ordered the size down, Elizabeth. I also thought they looked a little roomy in the front view, photo 2. Otherwise they do look like a fantastic style for you. I love how you've shown them here.

I'm also glad that you ordered a size down. Those look too big, especially the back view. I don't have these but find that denim will soften with washing. You might try fabric softener in the rinse as well as dryer sheets and dryer balls or clean sneakers to beat on them in the dryer.

Okay, I'm struggling with JCrew sizing recently, it has become wonky for me. Things have become strangely large in the size I typically order, which is a 4, or a small, and I'm having to size down to a 2, or extra small, but doing this in tall sizes gets tricky, and mostly doesn't work.

They look super on you! I can't order down a size, it looks like (all gone, sob) but maybe I will get lucky in store.

Staysfit, I've had some issues with the sizing at J. Crew lately, also. For me, with tops, it's been a bit of the reverse -- my normal size isn't working and I should size up! Very weird. I think sometimes it just comes down to the cut of the item. Some are too narrow in the shoulder for me.

I sized down to a 24, and they are still big. I popped them into the drier to shrink - which helped a bit. I also got them on super sale for $35. I bought the TROUSER jeans version - see below. I like them a lot despite the bagging out. Nice architectural drape.

Well, I thought that yesterday... now I'm back to winter coats and boots, so I guess mother nature is helping my impatience.

OK, one more question. I just clued in that I can return these to the J. Crew store in Ottawa, as I'm going there for work this weekend. This will save me significant return shipping costs. The downside is that I won't have the smaller pair in my grubby hands before then, so won't be able to compare.

How confident are we all that the smaller size will fit better????

I have just hopped on the Rayner bandwagon, too, could not resist them at this sale price. I did go with my usual size 26, since I gained half a pant size over the winter. Hopefully they will fit and I made the right choice vs. sizing down to 25. I guess I will see.

My Rayners are in the Hope wash and they won't load for me either. I guess they must have sold out. They are not trouser jean style but look like regular high waist jeans with wide legs. Mine were on final sale so I took a big chance that they would fit and I was happy they did.
