Does doing push ups build up shoulders and upper arms in women?

I am definitely not a mesomorph. I have long skinny arms. Last year I decided that working with resistance bands wasn't doing much for my upper arms and with those cute sleeveless dresses from Boden I decided to work on push ups. I did them from the knees, but that bothered my knees.

I've gotten to the point that I can do them from a bench, but not yet strong enough from the ground.

I don't gain much weight in my upper body--it's mainly in the post menopausal mid-section and belly. I have noticed as I get out my tailored blazers for cooler weather that they seem a bit tight through the shoulders. I Googled the topic, but just turned up articles about men building bulk with push ups. In the last week I've read 2 articles about 2 female weight lifters, age 51 and 82.

Anyone here have experience with this? My arms are much firmer and look better, but they still belie my age. Mainly I'm trying to stay strong and look a bit better. I wouldn't mind having better shoulders either.

Sorry, no before and after photos today.
