Since I got my colors "done" a few months ago (True/Warm/Leaf Autumn), and did some Pinteresting to narrow in on my style preferences, I've been starting to put those lessons into practice.
I've been (relatively speaking, for me) shopping up a storm, with 21 total purchases so far this year (not counting gear). I have 90 total items in categories that I count (that's tops, bottoms, toppers, and shoes; *not* counting gear, basics, accessories, and outerwear), and I think I'd like to keep it close to that number, though we'll see how that goes. My ideal goal is to wear almost everything often (when seasonally appropriate, and perhaps with a small special occasion capsule), and wear items out before I'm tired of them.
My house continues to eat money (new bedroom flooring! New roof! Still don't know what's causing the remaining exterior leaks into my living room! Still need to put my living room back together after the leaks are fixed!), so I made my wardrobe purchases pretty frugally. Almost everything was from Poshmark, ranging from under-$20 to $63, with the average probably around $25 (Free People, Anthropologie, Eileen Fisher, Ralph Lauren, MM LaFleur, Loft, Sanctuary, and some brands I'd never heard of). Plus a few new Banana Republic Factory purchases. I went a little crazy with the autumn colors (I never thought I'd have so much orange!). I *adore* some of the pieces, and others were somewhat less successful, but they were all inexpensive enough that I can experiment, learn, and then re-Posh or donate.
Below are some of my recent purchases, plus #17 is an outfit with the Banana Republic Factory patchwork skirt that I wore to work and felt good in (forgive the plywood subfloor; that's the room that just got new flooring). My boss (male, former military, not into fashion) commented, "I love those greens; that's awesome!", which I took as high praise (... though he might just like military greens...). Two of my doctors also complimented my outfits when I was wearing my colors, which was new, so I feel like I'm doing something right.
My next near-term goals:
1. Keep slowly culling things that don't work or are worn out, and thoughtfully adding and experimenting.
2. Play with layering (easier as we move into autumn). Most of the looks I love incorporate interesting layers, and it's not something I'm good at yet. This is the thing that *might* push my closet a little larger if I get the hang of it, but maybe I can manage it with less.
3. Play with accessories, and thoughtfully add to those. I'm especially interested in adding some belts and ear cuffs, and maybe finding bracelets or rings that don't annoy me when I'm typing.
(Edited to add one of my favorite new purchases as #18; it's a long vest with tiny buttons at the shoulders and buttonholes on the "tails", which can turn it into a draped top as shown. I suspect there are a few more ways to wear it that I haven't figured out yet...)
