Problematic Skirt and Vest

This skirt just doesn't look right to me. Is it too big? Is it the length? Color? Styling (I'm wearing it here with black lace up boots and tights)? I bought it with a store credit, have never worn it, and don't want it to immediately become an orphan.

This vest! Oh, how I loved it when I tried it on in the store. But now, I can't for the life of me figure out how to style it. Maybe it's just not for me.

Give it to me straight, ladies.

I think the skirt may be a bit too big on you: see that puckering on your tummy? Other than that I think it looks great exactly like you styled this: I love brown and black together - and length is fine too. Have you tried to size down?
As for the vest I am not a big expert but have you tried to wear it with outfit #2? Maybe it should have less contrast with the top under it?

They did not have the skirt in a smaller size, would have had to order it, maybe I should have done that -- of course nothing has been ironed. In the meantime, here is the vest with lower contrast. Still not sure...

I'm sorry I don't see any problematic pieces. I think they are just fab! I like the vest thingy with the higher contrast shirt.

I also like the black vest with the white top. It looks perfect to me. I also think the skirt looks really good on you. I think the slight "fold" diagonally across the front is just from the way you are standing. The bent knee creates a bit of an angle. I love the color of it too.

Kyle, your comment re the vest and then seeing it made me smile. Because it takes one to know one! I so understand. While I think it looks too costume-y in the first pic, I really like how you styled it above (necklace, dark outfit...). You are so stunning.

However I do think it is your wonderful sense of style that I like in the whole outfit. You cold recreate the wonderful luxurious feel of the outfit without the vest, I'm sure! So, the vest: I imagine you would have to be prepared to wear it only with black, only with form fitting clothes, and only in some occasions.

Possible occasions:
- a cozy diner among acquaintances in a castle;
- an evening at the opera;
- a movie premiere;
- an outing to see a play;
- a press conference (you are giving);
- a day charity that has to do with art.

The skirt: it is too big. Return it. You won't wear it.

What Krishnidoux said about the vest! With one slight adjustment: I think you could also wear it with charcoal grey underneath, or (possibly) something with a small pattern that includes black/grey. It's a stunning piece; the question is, will you use it.

I was also going to say if the skirt twists about on you as you move it is definitely too big. I love the colour combo of your outfit and the way you have styled it, but if it's too big, it has to go.

I would wear the vest with something low-contrast, as Sveta first suggested, though I don't think it has to be black. But, if you are getting the feeling that it's not for you, then maybe it needs to go back?

Is the skirt leather? It looks sort of stiff, making the fit really important...It does look too big to me, I think, through the hips.

That vest is a very dramatic piece and is sure to get attention. If that's what you want, play it up! It could be a star attraction of any outfit.

The skirt looks fine to me, actually. I think if it were much tighter you might not be able to move in it. But if it feels at all weird you won't wear it, which is a much more important consideration IMO.

Skirt looks great! Try the vest with a colored belt or sash on the outside.

I like the skirt a lot. Have you tried it with softer colors? Black is high contrast with it, so it might be interesting to see it with something more tonal.

The vest is fun too, but again, I'd try playing down the contrast with the top under it.

I find that I have to get the right balance when wearing leather boots and a leather jacket. I always end up taking one leather piece off. Perhaps it is just too much leather? I also wonder if the vest is long enough to wear over a shortish dress?

I think you look great in it, but maybe your hesitation stems from a possible Las Vegas showgirl silhouette? For some reason, that's what first popped into my head, sorry.

Kyle, I think both look great. The vest does look good combined with lower contrast colors but the white works too. It's quite a dramatic piece and I love it on you. The skirt also looks great to me. I think it may be the way you are standing or the skirt may need pressing. The brown and black is a very nice combination. Love them both.

Kyle, the vest is uber dramatic and fab. You need to get comfortable wearing it, that's all. It is an attention-grabbing item. So wear it with confidence -- remember Karen's inspiring post from today with her fur collared sweater!

As for the leather skirt, you definitely don't want a skintight leather skirt, but also it shouldn't be baggy as there is always the potential for stretch as you wear it. I always find it hard to judge fit from forum photos, but does it slide around backwards or do other annoying skirt tricks? If so I would return it. If not, the color is divine and I think you will wear it loads.

I like the fit of the leather skirt! I think you lose the elegance when they are too tight. Add textured hose to that outfit and it's k-word worthy.

As you know, I like the dramatic vest best with a low contrast top. The all black or tonal outfit is the way to go. KILLER. You *can* lighten up your shoes. But as far as the top goes, I vote low contrast and no belt.

I love both! I was going to suggest sheer black hose with the skirt, but I just read Angie's reply and really like the idea of something textured.

I was going to say what San said -- perhaps the vest with different shoes? I think it's cool but it could look like a costume if you have too much black leather at once. Or a dominatrix.

Maybe the skirt could be altered, if it's in danger of slipping downward?

I see no problem with the skirt! It's how my leather pencil skirt fits me. I agree with Angie, you don't want it to be too tight...

And the black outfit looks fab to me. Sorry, no help from t his quarter!
