Princess party - Update on rant :)

My DD is invited to a birthday party tomorrow. It's a Princess party and they want the girls to dress in the theme. The birthday girl is a distant relative and a few years younger than mine but she wanted to go along so we got out her old dance tutu and she is wearing with fairy wings and a tshirt/tights/leggings and sparkly pink "cons". It's pretty cute actually. We agreed it's as princess-y as my tomboy gets.

But I just re-read the invite (yes at 11pm the night before) and they want the ADULTS to dress in costume.
Is that not kind of ridiculous? And I would be related to these people
It says "Moms and Dads : channel your inner Princess or Prince Charming and come dressed as your favorite".

I'm thinking that DH should take this one!

UPDATE:
Well after DS soccer tourny (his team actually WON first round) took twice as long as we thought, and I dropped him home and changed, by the time I got to the party in time for cake, there were 2 adults dressed up. My loony cousin who was in full on Cinderella. I knew she would pick her (she's blonde) and her best friend who was in some goth punk princess thing.
My sister and I armed ourselves with a glass of wine and volunteered for dish duty to escape her nuttiness. Having very large extended family nearby is......not always good but certainly interesting.

I will recycle my DoC look tomorrow - skinny jeans, black cashmere sweater, neon pink blazer and blue flats. Plus pearls and a sparkly brooch.

Hahaha, yes, it's a bit ridiculous. I suggest you tie a scarf around your head, sunglasses, and say Grace Kelly is your favourite princess

I think she was meaning Cinderella but I will do my best DoC and pretend I didn't get the memo. My parents are going and I seriously doubt my dad will be in Prince attire (although picturing him as Prince the Singer is hilarious).

Yes, my favourite Disney Princess is Tiana from Princess and the Frog. I do feel it may be a little short notice to put together a frog look.

Wait a darn sec! What's to prevent you from going as a prince?
I'd be very tempted to take out by pink gumboots and dress as the Little Prince (Saint-Exupery) in white pants/shorts, white shirt, flower brooch or corsage, and a dressing gown! Or get a top hat to channel Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. Or a pair of jumpers/overalls and call it Prince William on deployment! Or borrow a slick guitar, stick on some sequins and sideburns, and call myself the artist-formerly-known-as-Prince! Take a hobby horse and a red coat, go as Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty; or just get a lion mask and go as the Beast... Hmmm! possibilities :-p

Is this a really young child's party? When I was of birthday party with themes and paper invitations age, my mom just dropped me off. I don't remember ever having her attend one, let alone in costume. I agree with Cora that this is a perfect opportunity to rock a headscarf and big glasses, or perhaps a full skirt and gladiators a la Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday?

I have to say that as a parent, I can't stand parties that expect more of you than just showing up reasonably on time and with a gift. Costumes? Seriously!? In this economy they want guests that are bringing a gift to also get a costume together? (Guess who is invited to an adult Pirate themed birthday party which requires costumes this summer- oh yes, I am more than a bit annoyed!)

As a fellow parent I feel your pain. Although in my crowd, there would be about a dozen Princess Leias. And then there would be me, scowling, in my usual attire because dammit, EVERY WOMAN IS A PRINCESS - INSIDE.

I feel your pain. I don't like kids birthday parties. I would hate to have to dress up for one. I generally enjoy my kids and their activities, but birthday parties are one thing I seriously dislike. I don't even like my own kids' parties, much less someone else's party. I usually convince my husband to go instead since he's more social than me.

Party time in 2 hrs.
It is supposed to be a kids party but a lot of family is invited (there are a lot of kids in the family) so not just classmates. I don't know if it's any classmates actually. Obviously this 2nd cousin is not as "sane" as I thought.

Best part is I spoke with my mom this morning (also invited although her role is apparently Queen Mum) and she said "it's ridiculous and any adult who shows up in a costume is ridiculous". I love my mother sometimes.

Son has a soccer event since it isn't raining so parents take DD to start of party and I go to soccer and then party with son. He will most likely be covered in mud. Good times.
Somehow DH got himself out of all the madness....

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. I say if you have a plastic tiara lying around, wear that. If not, go as you are - I'm sure you'll not be the only parent without costume.
