Oh my gosh... After a visit to my beloved hairdresser left me with locks a little more auburn than what I'm used to, I realized all the taupes and violets in my makeup bag didn't work anymore. I decided to start with the lips (am on a quest for a bright pout these days). Browsing the internet, looking for lipstick color ideas... found this:

"Now You Can Wear the Same Red Lipstick as Emma Stone

(...) (makeup artist) prepped with Decleor Aromessence Neroli Hydrating Oil Serum ($73; )

(...) and then added Decleor Hydra Floral 24HR Moisture Activator Rich Cream ($47)

(...) dabbed on Decleor Hydrotenseur Anti Fatigue Eye Serum ($57; )

(...) and applied Decleor Intense Nutrition Luxuriant Nourishing Lip Balm ($18; )

That's 195$ and we haven't applied any lipstick yet! What is this scam? Am I the only one to find this ridiculous?

How does lipstick have any staying power overtop all of this stuff? As if.

My limit on most cosmetics seems to be about $30-$35 - lipstick I typically buy is under $20. I have tried a few of the more expensive brands but don't really see them as any better and in fact they often have way more chemicals than I'm comfortable with.

For that expense, you could get a tube of retin-a and use a product that actually does something for your skin! Not saying you need to, but that's what I do:)

Wow.

I have hyper sensitive skin, and a recent flare-up of eczema on my hands sent me to the dermatologist. She told me a lot of stuff sold at Target is as good as the super expensive stuff, at least for me.

Sent me to get Cetaphil and Cera-Ve. She said I could pay more if I wanted to, but it wouldn't do any more.

Something to think about...

Thistle thank you for this tip. It's so good to be reminded that ultimately, creams are creams and won't affect our skin passed their immediate use - lest possible damage from the perfumes and preservatives added to products we might slap on every day.
i once heard a dermatologist say that beyond moisterizing, all the creams out there did nothing, EXCEPT for prescribed retinoids preperations, which really worked into the derm.

Aziraphale, some of us who are rendered temporarily vulnerable due to life's tough edges will fall for it... it only shows how we, consciously or not, and on top of all normal preoccupations, grow up fighting off day in and day out messages from the exterior world that we are not enough as we are, or that there is something wrong with us, and that wrong thing should be fixed above all else. Our very qualities - empathy, resilience, - are turned around against us in this process: making us feel guilty for not being adequate, setting us up one against the other in a competition for beauty, blinding us. We fight very hard against this omnipresent alienation but if we are taken by hardship we can be fooled by the false promises of publicity. (In the process lose a few dollars).
In this sense, this forum is such a great antidote, because for one we are not pitted one against the other (it's a collaboration). Also, together we deconstruct the potentially poisonned messages we receive.

Even worse, is the insinuation that aging is a character flaw because, after all, it IS preventable if I had just used that cream or serum—or so I am made to feel. Same goes for not looking “attractive”, or being “slim and healthy”, because, obviously, if I had just put in more effort in “taking care of myself” and “not letting myself go”, I too could have looked like the supermodels and celebrities pitching the products and services.

As you say, Krishnidoux, feeling guilty for my “failure” of not being young, attractive, and slim makes me an easy target for a $200 night cream.

I love perusing Bloomingdale's cosmetic department and coming home with tons of samples to try. I can say the same thing about Sephora. However, I always seem to go back to my old Cerave pm moisturizer and Avon Anew.

I know that nothing I put on will turn back the hands of time, but just knowing that I am doing something for myself (like a facial) just puts me in a better and more relaxed mood. Perhaps it is a confidence booster. I also believe that you do not have to spend a ton of money to achieve this effect.

danusia, right on! A simple candle, some facial exercises and a good face massage with oil bought at the health store does it for me. People keep asking me what I do but I think facial exercises do work. Thank you for the reminder that it has to start inside.

Oh gosh, my original comment was meant as a joke. I apologize for not replying for so long -- I haven't visited the site for probably a week, and I haven't been commenting much lately as it is -- but just so you know, I was including myself when I said "we women keep falling for it". I am sometimes "temporarily vulnerable" too, as are most of us. I find it helpful to find the humour in the whole situation, though -- helps me see the bigger picture.

I also find it so very humorous when my 13-year-old daughter, with her beautiful face and perfect hair, moans that she looks too young. I look at her and think, just you wait, my love.

ETA good article, by the way. I agree with everything. I talk a big game and most of the time I believe myself, but in the moments of doubt it's nice to have reinforcement such as this.

Thanks for the link krishnidoux. I've noticed that my best WIW pics are when my photographer makes me laugh while taking the picture. So maybe the cost of face maintenance is to laugh more?
